Okay, what did i just watched? This movie has a super character development. I mean, by first sight you may say this is just a movie about fishes but hell the end hits hard.

I see lots of topics into here, the learned helplessness, the model of social conformism, surviving hard times and coping mechanism. The art is good and music is fine, maybe the style is not the best but what can you ask when using CGI in 2012, anyhow the script even though they are only fishes is daring and herathbreaking. Just, a whole new experience. I will never regret this movie.

I don't wanna me a long review but get to the points straight.

It is not the best horror manga you will see, but it has something I have never seen before, the author resembles a topic that often is not good touched in a good made psychological horror story.

Seiichi not ony has PTSD (we see many signs and symptoms of this all around the story in a pretty acurrate way,
symptoms of intrusion, hyperarousal, avoidance and also depression are earsily recognized). Plus, we also can notice disorganized attachment and avoidant coping signs derived from constant dissociation derived by trauma. You see how PTSD from ... its simple form to its complex form without getting into the technical aspects, you see it from inside! from his perspective! And the best, it is not glorified, it is not demonized, it is not idealized, none of that. It is simply perfectly narrated, written and described in that aspect.

The art is too beautiful, not only, it deviates a bit from your traditional manga taking realistic aspects, but you keep knowing that it is manga. The author also handles the use of shadows, colors, and scene composition in an excellent way, and that with a way of drawing based on pure lines. Simply this is a good work art of the human portrait.

I know that it may seem that it "gives a lot of thought" but the author explain to you what is called rumination and it is very well done and also, it is explainable in all that's happening and has LOTS OF SENSE.

It never justifies mother behavior,but it is explained, characters are not plain (more than the ones needed) but you see more of them behind with time, it gives its time to explain what is happening and how trauma gets into you (from someone that also has life trauma, this was hearthbreaking imo).

In short: It's a well reported and written story of an abusive mother and the consequences on her son with spectacular art hidden in the psychological horror genre, only because this story is not real, but this story could be. In the only aspect where there is no balance are the last chapters, after the trial of the mother, there I did notice legal stuff wasn't good portrait, was more like average imaginative "things that happen" but in the end, I managed to close very well.
