It's incredibly hard to find the words for an experience as personal as this anime has been for me. I can count on one hand the number of anime, or better yet, any sort of entertainment, that have made me cry.
ef - a tale of memories is chief among them, and I still cannot entirely figure out why. It's an exceptional anime by all standard conventions, but what exactly sets it atop other outstanding series remains elusive.
The thing for me that has always made for an incredibly enjoyable experience, is having identifiable and genuine characters. There's a wide enough range of personalities that most people
...
will be able to find someone to identify with; and every single character feels real, in a way that very little has been able to equal. Again Clannad comes to mind, I feel very comfortable saying if you enjoyed that, then you'll definitely like ef enormously.
There was some amazing cinematography in a few of the scenes, that just goes that much further in reinforcing the strong events taking place. Occasionally it will forgo the usual anime style and go for a bit more of a simple drawing as if you were looking at a piece of paper, with the pictures upon it in motion.
If by this point you're not convinced, just go ahead and give it a watch anyway.
