Kannagi is quite the show for sure. It may be viewed at first glance as another comedic high school harem anime, but in truth it really is a bit more than that. This show definitely has its fair share of cliché episodes with tons of memorable and humorous moments, as well as also driving home an acceptable amount of thought towards gods, self awareness, discovering oneself, etc.
Before I cover the my big complaints to the show, I'll start off with the small stuff
Art (10) - It's a beautiful show. Especially for what... Being released in the 2000's? It surprised me actually. Everyone looks very fluffy

and dare I say, lush. Smooth smooth smooth Animation as well!
Sound (7) - I've never been too picky on this section in particular. Probably since I'm an English speaker and since I'm not from Japan, I don't seem to pick up on the quality of voice acting as much. I will say I have heard Very well done voice acting in anime before, but most are just... Normal sounding. And this is what this show has in particular. Just normal. But as far as the music goes... Love the OP, love the ED, and Soundtrack within the episodes is, y'know , a regualr Soundtrack. Overall it's okay.
Enjoyment (7) - Kannagi is a great show! I would definitely recommend it to any friend of mine. It's quite light hearted and doesn't rely heavily on jokes about perversion and indecency, unlike most shows unfortunately. It has its fair share of those of course, and people seem to be even categorizing the anime as a harem as well, but the "perversion" is not so overpowering that it takes over the show and ruins it. It's done moderately, which is a very nice touch and shows its maturity compared to other shows. Other than that stupid perversion shit or whatever, the show contains many great memorable moments and episodes! Lemme tell ya, it's a funny show! It really is! It stands out a little more for sure.
Story (6) - alright, so this is probably where people may disagree with me. First off let me say, the IDEA for the story is great, but how it was executed could have had been done better. Not by much, it was done pretty well, but there were definitely many sections in the anime that were either unnecessary, boring, or just had little to no action on forwarding the character development. The best example of this was the karaoke bar episode. I won't spoil what happens blah blah blah, but I have one big complaint. The show uses half the time in this episode to either fill in slapstick comedy, funny jokes and remarks that the Characters quote to eachother, or just plain silliness. Sure you could say this continues the character development... But I beg to differ. I say this because I believe the show could do without the cliché episodes like the karaoke bar. Sure the episode covers what would happen when all the characters are out in the situation of hanging out in the karaoke bar, including the social tensions, internal and external feelings and all, but the show develops the Characters in the more unproductive way like most bottom bin niche 12 episode animes. The way the show executes the scenario and reactions of characters during the karaoke bar episode DO add character development, but in a very shallow way. The whole purpose of that episode (and for just about any episode to any show) was to build up a way to prove a point at the end which further adds to the development of the storyline. But in this particular episode, there is no buildup. It just aimlessly wanders around, making jokes and slapstick comedy to fill in the gap. What I'm trying to say, is that SOME episodes could be used in a more resourceful manner that is not just filler. This does not only happen in the karaoke bar episode either. There are at least 2 or 3 that do this as well.
BUT OTHER THAN THAT BIG COMPLAINT, the show is great! Most of the episodes are very enjoyable and do a fine job at keeping my attention, and progressing the story, Characters, and Themes. I wouldn't say it is the deepest show, but it allows for ones mind to think a bit and realize some things they may not have though of before. Overall, great story, despite the large complaint.
Characters (7) - The Characters are lovable ,for sure! Like I said above though, some of the episodes dont do the best job of developing the Characters, and some of the episodes barely address one of the main characters, Nagi as much as you would think they should. Then again, the same goes for every character in the show, but of course, it's only 13 episodes so you can't expect TOO much. Generally speaking, they did a good job. there wasnt really one character I disliked.
Overall (7) In a nutshell, Kannagi is an enjoyable anime to the average viewer and is a perfect show to be watched casually, yet the show spends too much time not progressing the story or characters in each episode, which ends up making each minute not as captivating as the last in some cases. Kannagi by all means is not a bad anime. It's actually one of the better short series shoes you can watch, but in my personal opinion, it still contains that slight disconnect from the show being a classic with each episode being amazing and memorable to the show just throwing certain cliché scenarios to fill the void in the storyline. Good show, but like most shows in general, it has room for improvement.

This is the first review I've written, so just a little disclaimer about how I review things.
I'm a pretty generous reviewer. So this might just be a 10/10 out of nowhere. Also, some anime's that people don't necessarily think as great shows, well... I do. For some reason, certain shows that people sort of hate, I really enjoy. And just letting it out right now, this show was so awesome. :~) Shit man. this is one of the greatest rom com thingy shows i've seen. after getting back into anime for having not watched any for a long period of time, this show turned me into an ... |
