This show is so underrated it physically hurts.
In an INCREDIBLY bizarre way, I could describe this show as feeling "Natural". Yes, I think this High-fantasy journey following a young girl and her cyborg companion traversing through an abyss filled with unknown dangers and monsters at every turn, has some of the most natural and realistic storytelling I've ever seen in a show.
This is not to say everything in this anime is realistic. It is a fantasy show after all, but something about the environment and the characters fall together so naturally. So much so that when something tragic happens, or our protagonists encounter
...
something that could completely change the course of their journey forever - I found that the sadness I felt wasn't the usual one given by these types of anime, it wasn't sadness born out of anger, shock or frustration. It was sadness that was mournful, because this show had created such a well-written ecosystem that unfortunate and unfair events felt fitting. This show had communicated to me that children traversing a wilderness filled with dangerous creatures and curses and madness was going to be threatening. Not in a shonen way, in a real-world, what-would-happen-if-you-actually-shoved-a-twelve-year-old-in-the-jungle way.
With all that being said, this anime isn't all doom and gloom, you have it's characters to thank for that. Having the main characters be so simple yet lovable is such a smart choice. These characters and their bright optimism is such a stark contrast to the environment and keeps the story from being too depressing. I find it amazing how the show manages to consistently have our protagonists be uplifting without making them seem over the top or annoying, instead it only makes you want to root for them and see them continue on their travels despite all the odds being stacked against them.
On a more technical note, the appearance of the show is also top-notch, with some scenes looking ghibli-esque. The soundtrack is also amazingly emotive, with even the opening feeling like a perfect fit for what you're about to watch.
Overall this was a near perfect execution, with my only issues being mostly nitpicks that really shouldn't put anyone off this hidden gem of a show, if you're looking for something unique in today's highly over-saturated market then this is DEFINITELY an anime worth checking out.
