This anime conflicted me at times.
The same things about it that I like also serve to be it's downfall at times. The art can sometimes be pretty phenomenal, as I'd come to expect out of MAD House with other titles it has. The transformations of people and battles almost always look amazing, but then at the same time large group shots of people look like 3d robots and sometimes close up shots of faces tend to show the difficulty of drawing faces (or two eyes pointing in the same direction).
The music at times can be great, while I'm not much of a screamo-metal
...
fan, I found the theme enjoyable and the songs during battles keep a high pace and intensity that goes well with what's happening. But the mix of dubstep and trap beats sometimes feels erratic and all over the place. The story also kind of irks me at times, when Migi and Shinichi (the main duo) talk about more philosophical concepts such as, what determines life and should it be protected, they sometimes gloss over it as if to say "we know that's something the viewer wants to ask but we don't really want to write this conversation out".
The human characters in the show (Shinichi's classmates) tend to more the more standard fare of any high-school slice-of-life anime, while not too boring, nothing incredibly interesting about them either. The monsters were almost all one-dimensional, but nothing really more than that was to be expected.
However, I really did enjoy the direction and pacing of the show, with characters and monsters clearly inspired by The Thing or Tokyo Gore Police perhaps, a lot of these monsters looked truly terrifying and were always interesting to look at. It was really something I just enjoyed looking at and the pace was never slowed down too much for me to even care a lot about its shortcomings.
