Dimension W is an amazing sci-fi experience and in this review I want to expose some of my thoughts related to this manga. Please, note that I'm not a native english speaker, so there may be some problems in my grammar or expressions. However, I hope it is not a problem for the understanding of my ideas.
[ Characters ]
The dynamic between Kyouma and Mira is pretty good. It's a great duo and both of them have good character arcs, solid backgrounds, great moments, and everything that you'd ask of protagonists.
On the other hand, the secondary characters and extras
...
are fine, this is one of those stories where most of the characters have a specific role in the plot. Thanks to that, they don't feel out of place and most of them have a recognizable personality that doesn't fall in gimmicks. My only problem here is that you will remember them more for what they did for the plot than for who they are. It's still a solid cast and some secondaries are exceptionally well done.
[ World and Plot ]
As for the worldbuilding, I would say that it's well done. I spent a lot of time analyzing events and the chronological order of them (and when I say "a lot", it's A LOT), and it's obvious that the author had a lot of things planned from the very beginning. This manga has a lot of juicy foreshadowing. The rereading value of this story is quite high, since you will notice a lot of things that you didn't in the first time. I wouldn't say that the manga has a huge amount of complex worldbuilding that can rival with every manga in existence, but it's correct for everything that the story wants to expose.
As for the plot itself, it was of my liking. I really liked the arcs, they all can be considered its own thing but they're also related to previous events. This manga offers a great variety in its arcs. You can find some action, mystery, sci-fi focused chapters, among other things. Everything is handled well until the end, and the author managed to connect a lot of things, thus creating a very solid and enjoyable experience. My only problem here is that there is a small plot hole (yes, I'm an expert at nitpicking stuff).
[ The Dimension W ]
Now, this part of my review is focused on the most important fictional concept of the manga, the "Dimension W". Basically, it's the fourth dimensional axis from which infinite energy can be obtained. At first I didn't understand all the implications and stuff presented and it was very frustrating. But when I started analyzing it, I got the idea of what the author was exposing and I found it fascinating. Thanks to this element, the author created a very solid and consistent way to explain some typical elements of science-fiction stories, and it never loses continuity and logic within the universe created by Yuji Iwahara. A wise person once said that the "fantasy" is the art of the impossible, but the science-fiction is the art of the POSSIBLE. The 4th dimensional axis, the "Dimension W", represents that idea perfectly.
I think that my favorite part of this element is that it's not only a bunch of technicalities, the author used this to explore some interesting topics that are closely related to the manga's main story, and that was delightful. It may be cumbersome in the beginning, but it's satisfactory when you understand it, and it also adds some depth and subtexts that can be very pleasing for people in search of them. I really liked this element, it is also SUPER original and that adds points. It's one of the greatest and most well handled sci-fi things that I've ever seen.
My only problem here is that some readers may not find this concept of their interest, which would be completely understandable for those who are not in sci-fi stuff.
[ Art ]
I'm not an expert in this topic, but I'll say what I can say as a conventional reader with no knowledge of art theory. I think that the art is great. Iwahara's drawings are very clean and you can always understand what is happening in the pages, and it is also very expressive and I personally love the fact that the style didn't change at all with the passing of volumes, it makes the manga very consistent. Oh, and the character designs are neat, they are all recognizable and nice.
[ Conclusion ]
I pointed out my problems with the manga in my review, but I think that it had so many successes that those few little problems are overshadowed.
So, as a final thought, I enjoyed every aspect in this manga and I consider it a very underappreciated series. I wouldn't say that it's for everyone, but it definitely deserves a shot! If you want to try it, go ahead and have fun! I hope you can enjoy it as much as I did. Thank you for reading my review!! :)
