Patlabor: The Movie

This is a spoiler-free review.

This movie is fantastic. I first watched this film (and have rewatched it several times) without having seen the OVA's or the series it was based on.
You are not required to be familiar with them to enjoy this excellent story as it is self-contained and firmly establishes its own universe.

Produced in 1989 and set in what was the near future the story and plot holds up surprisingly well in the current digital and ultra-information age.

Like many other Gen-X anime fans, this movie cemented what good anime was supposed to be to someone in an emerging market.

This movie is greatness; Neo-dystopian realistic post-war setting, plenty of action, science fiction plot and story mystique, inner workings of urban life, the street life of motorcycle gangs, topped with smart and intelligent dialog; American audiences were starved for smart anime having grown out of the after-school fair of Robotech - ignorant and unaware of the sagas like Macross it had chopped and spliced - because it was thought audiences wouldn't get it. Summer Wars (Anime) add
This movies title is in some ways a good indicator of when to watch it. Perhaps a Sunday afternoon matinee in the summer is the best time to watch this often heartwarming story of a close-knit family and the young-love situational dilemma between Kenji and the requisite high school classmate
A good story, and a decent - but not original - plot tied around some interesting characters makes for a good movie.
Greatness requires more than story and plot, and nothing serves to remind us of that when at the end of the movie you realize that there was a lot of more to ...
