So good it makes you think the ending was actually good. A few plot holes, but the high quality animation with the really unique story, would make this an instant watch recommendation for any anime fan, that is until the ending is just a complete backstab to everything the series was about. The first seasons were about the remaining part of humanity living behind walls having to face Titans, for the sake of freedom, a real interesting world for a post apocalyptic world. Then the story took a "humans are the real enemy" turn halfway into the series, but the ending really solidified that and ... it's a waste of a unique concept this series originally had.

That said, I actually like the ending itself since the final scene of war taking place on Paradis Island, with bullets falling next to Eren's tombstone and the city getting hit with missiles is really powerful and raw for a series to end that way. Then showing the post apocalyptic greenery overtaking the destroyed buildings, a young boy finding the same tree Ymir once found, really reminded me of Etrian Odyssey.

The only way this finale could be saved is if Isayama made a squeal series and cooked like Oda or Miura, like making the AOT characters legendary figures or something similar. Otherwise, its a let down and a backstab to the prequel series.

This is peak anime, so good it transcends the medium and you forget you're watching an anime. This isn't just a good story with good politics, it's the show that perfectly complements both and gives a satisfying conclusion to everything the series is about. It shows the most idealized version of a monarchy, against the idealized version of someone who believes in democracy, in an era where humans now live in space. The story is so interesting throughout the 110 episodes (minus a few filler episodes in the first season), that if you've watched and liked the first or second episode, you're gonna enjoy the ... rest. The characters, the music, the science, the history, the world building, it succeeds like not other political space opera does.

I wouldn't recommend this anime to beginners however, since requires a certain level of understanding and patience, something most modern anime fans lack until after they've had a variety of different types of anime and want to experience something completely different.
