Kings Avatar or otherwise known as Quan Zhi Gao Shou is a story the captures the words missed opportunity.
Now the Kings Avatar has my least favorite anime trope. It’s not the most egregious or offensive (That honor belongs to nonsensical ecchi scenes to introduce female characters), but it was the one that ruins story progression the worst by removing conflict from it. The unbeatable all powerful character is the worst anime trope. I think before I go into a rant about why these screws stories over I should talk about why it exists. Simply these characters are created with enough personality that we

can register them as human but enough blandness that we can project ourselves onto them. It’s why Kirito has none descriptive face or why Groot is made such the same way. We want to project ourselves onto these characters. But if this doesn’t fit your fancy and you care for anything else the story loses all conflict. IT’s simple in order to create a character that you want to project yourself onto most studios go for wish fulfillment. In the guise of a Kirito one can get all the girls be the greatest badass, make friends, all the things they want to do with no effort because they just are a god. The conflict goes out the window as does the story. Conflict is created with two things happen a) something blocks the hero’s path and b) IT IS SOMETHING THAT CAN’T BE EASILY OVERCOME. How with a main character like Xie who wins everything all the time for no reason others than he his great and loves this video game, the viewer never expects that the odds will ever go against him or inhibit him at all. I spent more time rooting for everyone else because not only does he never lose but you never want to root for him anyway because he’s an aloof asshole. Plus the conflicts are petty and trite. Video game records, and games no one cares about This show has so much fluff it makes my body pillow pall in comparison. If this show had a good side cast it could forgive many of these issues but it doesn’t even have that. All the side characters can be broken down into one character trait. It’s lazy writing.
And the biggest issue was that I wanted to like this show. I really did. It has such great animation and a simply great op and soundtrack. Plus it even has the basis for a great character if Xie was given actually humanity. HE could have been a washed up gamer well past his prime who had to desperately work his way back into a pro scene he loved. Yet instead we have a player that was kicked off a team for no reason other than they lost even though the most passive fan can realize that wasn’t his fault.
And in the end I don’t really feel hate for this shows because the pity I feel instead is a lot more offensive. I pity the loss of a show that could have been good but wasn’t. However this is the best wish fulfillment show I have ever watched. 4/10
