Azumanga Daioh walked so that Nichijou could run. Together with other animes from the mid 2000s such as Gintama and Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei Azumanga Daioh helped pave the way for and inspire future iterations of the comedy genre. Most of the gags in the Azumanga Daioh are prolonged, so as to show the ridiculousness of the situations the characters find themselves in. Similiarly in Nichijou, the scenes often go so far that you'll start questioning how many more jokes they'll be able to fit in the skit. Apart from the longer sketches in the shows they also have their share of short jokes, often of the fairly esoteric kind. This is especially true for Nichijou, in which most of the sketches are part of their own miniseries, like for example Helvetica Standard (which has become a quite popular meme) or the Rock, paper, scissors sketches. The episodes of Azumanga Daioh are generally more thematically structured then the ones of Nichijou, with a few exceptions, notably among the aforementioned's final episodes. Therefore, you'll be able to foresee some of the events that'll occur in the episode your watching, excluding when they throw curveballs your way of course. Compared to Azumanga Daioh, Nichijou has a more formulaic approach to creating jokes, even though they share the same degree of quirkiness. Typically in Azumanga Daioh, the hilarity comes from the absurdity of the jokes and how nonchalantly the show thrives in these situations. Meanwhile, Nichijou's punchlines are usually clearer, but the enjoyment of the humour still come from the same basic idea. In spite of a few differences, Nichijou is in my opinion certainly a great series to check out if you appreciate goofy comedy shows like Azumanga Daioh.
