Bow down before Bleach
Indeed, the battle shounen
That does reign supreme
This concludes my review of Bleach, blogpost incoming so big brother MAL will ok my wordcount and allow posting.
I binged Bleach in like two weeks; binging anything, especially if you do enjoy it generally results in a higher degree of emotional investment. Kubo's all about emotion, so that worked in favor of furthering said investment. It's an emotive work, so to speak.
That's not enough words.
...
I'll endure the exile
I'll endure the exile
The darkness of night falls around my soul
And the hunter within loses control
Gotta let it out, gotta let it out
Gotta let it out, gotta let it out
This demon inside has ahold of me
Clenching its power, trying to break free
Gotta let it out, gotta let it out
Gotta let it out, gotta let it out
Move fast, baby, don't be slow
Step aside, reload, time to go
I can't seem to control
All this rage that's inside me
Pullin' shots, aimin' dots, yeah, I don't miss
Branded by fire, born in the abyss
Red hot temper, I just can't resist
All this vengeance inside me
All of these thoughts runnin' through my head
Arm on fire, veins burnin' red
Frustration is gettin' bigger
Bang, bang, bang, pull my Devil Trigger
Embrace the darkness that's within me
No hiding in the shadows anymore
When this wickedness consumes me
Nothing can save you and there's no way out
I'm a wildfire you won't tame
Igniting my temper, can't put out my flame
There's no way to contain
This storm swelling inside me
I'm a bomb you can't defuse
Might just accept you're gonna lose
Can't turn down, I refuse
To hold back anymore
All of these voices inside of my head
Blinding my sight in a curtain of red
Frustration is getting bigger
Bang, bang, bang, pull my Devil Trigger
When the night ends, it's not over
We fight through to get closer
Like a silver bullet piercing through
I throw myself into you
All of these voices inside of my head
Blinding my sight in a curtain of red
Frustration is getting bigger
Bang, bang, bang, pull my Devil Trigger

Incoherent, confusing, emotionally convoluted, essentially without structure, superficially random at first glance, FLCL is seemingly neither narrative driven nor character driven but rather is some sort of instinctual impulse, a kind of cathartic expression of adolescence. FLCL is musical, complimented by its heavy heart felt soundtrack, courtesy of the Pillows. You're never struck by the impression of having started a story by the beginning or having finished one by the end, as much as feeling like you've chanced by the midway point of some kid's transition from childhood to early adulthood, observing as it happens; and if attentive enough catching your reflection in
...
it too.
To avoid the possibility of being misconstrued, nothing said so far should reflect negatively onto FLCL. It is everything that it has been described as due to being almost entirely personal to its creator in its endless idiosyncrasies, Kazuya, by his own admission; with explicit references and in-jokes that only the man guilty of their genesis could actually capture and understand, put together with its speeding pace and general unwillingness to elaborate on the particulars, making sense of FLCL seems like an impossibility; and partially this is true, but it is also mostly inconsequential to FLCL's ability to achieve its goals.
This intimacy is what either makes or breaks the show for viewers, FLCL is driven by the desire to make you remember the more melancholic moods of early adolescence, the lack of direction, the disillusionment, the loneliness. It isn't meant to give you a narrative, it isn't meant to make you think, it just wants wants to leave an emotional impression, a melancholic microcosm about what coming of age really feels like; and it would be entirely dishonest to say it fails.

Let's start off with a false dichotomy, the show in question is often criticized for its preference of style over substance, a complaint that demonstrates a fundamental misunderstanding of art and is as insubstantial as it is hypocritical. On the other hand Bebop is praised endlessly for its technical aspects relating to presentation (animation, sfx, voice acting, etc), often coupled with some sort of attribution of a more profound message about these sort of vague, vacuous, mostly unreal emotions and hang-ups; a general lack of will to "move on" or an inability to "be an adult", to "grow up", and other assorted
...
unimportant cliches to be found among all the stylish action and dialogue.
Let it be said that Cowboy Bebop is not necessarily particularly original, but it never strikes you as trying to be. Essentially, the reason you should watch this, if you have any interest, is that it's cool, it excites the eyes and ears, and is not without its own flavor of emotional engagement. Bebop has prodigiously choreographed furious flights of fists and feet, charmingly cheesy dialogue, if you've got the right disposition for it, an entertaining, resonating cast that despite the pulp-like world they inhabit, feel realistic and believable, arguably more references and homages than it ought to, and a mostly pleasing soundtrack that at its best properly surprises when it matters to back it all up.
Despite whatever previous intentions one may be unaware of, Cowboy Bebop isn't really about anything other than being around for the ride these characters are on, a dramatic spectacle of a trip to be sure. By the end of it you're left with a strong feeling of shared experience, which should be expected of any character driven piece of fiction, but Bebop excels at this, which is probably why it stuck with so many people for as long as it did.
