This anime has been on my list for quite some time now, ever since last viewing it at a friends house on Toonami. I can say with great certainty that I regret sleeping on it for so long. There's a lot to love about Black Lagoon and very little to hate. Regardless of my stance, this is certainly a anime worth watching. Also fair warning i'm going over both season 1 & 2 in this review as there isn't any substantial difference between the two.
Firstly, the characters though spread out and very vague upon their origins, are incredibly well written. With a anime filled
...
to the brim with every kind of criminal imaginable it's very easy to not really care but these characters feel natural and rooted in reality. Rock is your typical white collar guy who gets thrown into this life of crime after being deemed expendable. Revy at first glance is a bloodthirsty pyschopath but later you'll see they have depth too. Dutch and Benny though not given as much screen time, still add layers to a otherwise solid cast.
The same cannot be said however to the side characters who sometimes feel like flavor of the week. As in they're less identifiable as individuals but moreso the gang as a whole. Because of this the plot can be all over the place. This isn't to say it's unenjoyable but if you're looking for a focused plot this may not be for you. But when facing everything from Nazis to the Mafia to Serial Killers to insert literally any orgainized criminal group you can think of, who has time to complain?
Black Lagoon is great whether you're new to anime or a connoisseur. Whether you just want to zone out or examine the many intricacies and philosophy Black Lagoon, this anime is great for almost everyone. So sit back, relax, and maybe bust out the booze. Cause this has all the grit of a Tarantino film in a bombastic 2 season package. Mercenaries never looked so fun and killing never looked so good.
Thank you for reading this review and have a good rest of your day/evening.

Seraph Of The End: Battle Of Nagoya is the subsequent war arc in the war between humans and vampires. Some of my critques of the first season transfer over here.
The story isn't all over the place as much as it is fragmented. Granted it's a war arc but in all honesty it follows your usual isekai formula. Main group faces enemy, main group gets stomped on, protagonist does some risky training/technique to get a power up, main group manages to survive another day. I'm not saying it's a bad plot, I'm just saying it's nothing ground breaking. Also they add even more new characters that
...
unlike the original cast, the new characters are mostly forgettable.
What this season does really well is again world building and using the anime's foundation to help set up in my opinion some pretty cool plot points. That and it really drives in the narrative of both sides are guilty, where in the beginning it wrote the vampires as evil it quickly shows that the humans aren't much better. Though also like the first season the vampire's motives still aren't very clear other than "we need to stay in control".
The fight scenes are decently choreographed and there's a lot more of them than season 1. The art style holds up well as usual, especially in the designs of the demon weapons and their powers. So if you liked this anime for the mindless bloodshed, you're in for a treat. But unfortunately with no clear ending in sight and no update, at the time of typing this, 6 years later, who knows when or if we'll get another season. All and all Seraph has me again wanting me to sink my teeth into more.
Thank you for reading my review, enjoy the rest of your day/evening.

Seraph Of The End, a anime with the theme of humans vs vampires. When Seraph popped up on my anime reccomendations I'll be the first to admit, I thought it was going to be your run of the mill dark fantasy anime that would largely become forgettable. In some ways it is and in other ways it is not. Here's what I mean.
Like most dark fantasy a very tragic event happens to either the main cast or the world. In this case, both. With a plague that wiped out 90% of humanity one could say that the stakes have never been higher. How Seraph differs
...
from other dark fantasies is with the characters. Our main protagonist Yuichiro is by all means a annoying asshole in the beginning. But as the season progresses the supporting cast, who are both one dimensional but also well rounded, bring out the best in Yuichiro. The voice actors do a great job of making these characters and their connections with one another feel authentic and real.
There are many "twists" throughout Seraph but to be honest the story isn't anything to write home about, it uses many tropes of anime as whole, and can be summed up as a isekai plotline. This isn't bad per se in fact some of it is rather refreshing such as Shinoa's teasing, the poer dynamic on both sides, and even the weapons. What Seraph does really well is world building. With intersecting plotlines and choice encounters, things change on the turn of a dime. Which helped keep my attention and made me want to keep watching.
The fight scenes are good and the characters are well written at least to the point if you don't remember their name, by looking at them you'll remember what they're about. The vampires are the more vague bunch but nonetheless they are just as unique as the main cast. One thing is for certain. I can't wait to sink my teeth into more.
Thanks for reading my review and have a great rest of your day/evening.

Who knew 2 religious figures could be so wholesome and entertaining. From the art to the jokes to the characters themselves, everything is light and refreshing. This movie translates well regardless of where you're from. The interpretations of Jesus and Buddha are as accurate as one could get. My only gripe is that the plot jumps around all over the place for such a short film. I personally could watch this for hours and not get bored.
Jesus said, "Come forth and receive eternal life." Sadly, we came fifth and received only 2 great OVAs and this wonderful film. Still, it's better than a toaster if

If you were expecting this to be a sequel to Puella Magi Madoka Magica, I will tell you ahead of time, it's not. It is as the title suggest, a side story. This review will contain some spoilers that are addressed in the original anime Puella Magi Madoka Magica. If you're starting out the series as a whole, then I suggest watching the original series followed by the 3rd movie Rebellion before watching this series. I say watch the 3rd movie but not the first two as the first two movies are basically the same as the plot as the original series. With that out
...
of the way, let's get down to business.
I watched this anime to finish off the series for the time being. I was captivated by the original series for its grim tone, eye catching art style, and cohesive plot. I can say this anime has 1/3 of that covered. There are many missed opprotunities as well as a few shining moments. Try to look at this anime through the perspective of using the rules of the original story and making a seperate entity entirely.
The pros of this anime include the art style, fight scenes, and the magical girl flavor of the week. The art and soundtrack still holds up strong in this itteration. The fight scenes between the witches and other magical girls are still as entertaining as ever. Lastly whereas the original magical girl cast had 5 girls (6 in Rebellion), this one has too many for me to keep track of. With that said the gear fits all the girl's personality and wish. Also they did a great job making each girl's design and personality different considering how many of them there are.
The cons are pretty numberous with my main gripes being the plot and the girls themselves. We all know the life of the magical girl. Girl shows potential to be a magical girl. Kyubey introduces themself and offers girl a wish in exchange for becoming a magical girl. Girl fights witches and sometimes other magical girls. Girl either "dies" from having her soul gem shattered or falls into despair and becomes a witch. Unfortunately these facts escape most of the main cast. This makes the tone in my opinion less dark than the original.
The girls themselves feel very hollow and fleshed out in magical girl appearance alone. This could be due to each girl only having a episode or two to develop with most of them getting none at all. Also because all of their wishes and interactions between each other seem selfish, half baked, and cold, it makes it hard for me to care about any of them or even remember their name. Prime examples are "Fan Girl Lottery", "Aggro Purple Hammer", and "The Disfunctional Power Rangers Trio". Even the main girl Iroha, who's led up to be the pseudo Madoka, suffers from the same spell of indifference.
The plot jumps all over the place and expects the viewer to keep up. Though it provides some cool angles like a new type of witch and power ups, it doesn't bring much to the stories besides plot convenience. Also on a personal note, I can't tell if this universe is a prequel, a sequel, or a Tomura alternate timeline. The plot doesn't bother explaining it probably because it doesn't have enough time to do so. I personally feel that with 24 episodes instead of 13, they probably could have fleshed out the story as a whole.
In conclusion, if you're a fan of the art and soundtrack, you'll probably enjoy this. If you don't want to think much and just want a quick story and fight scenes, then you'll probably enjoy this. However if you're here for the dark tone, cohesive narrative, or well written characters, then this may not be for you. This is what I would consider to be a anime that you can shut your brain off to watch. This doesn't make it good or bad per se but again this is only my opinion. I know one thing for sure. Much like Kyubey, this anime is not up front with us like the original.
As always thank you for taking the time to read my review and I hope you enjoy the rest of your day/evening.

Childhood, the innocence of youth, such a carefree time. Some look back at it fondly others would rather forget it all together. But when the past comes back to haunt you, what would you do? Would you run from it or face it head on? Would you try to right the wrongs that transpired?
Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day was a anime that my friends have recommended to me for years. The commonality between all of their recommendations was that the story and animation were what drew them in. Other reasons included a brilliant soundtrack, relatable characters, and the wave of nostalgia felt when
...
watching Anohana. After watching the entire anime in one binge session, I can say with much certainty that I regret sleeping on Anohana for so long. Here are a few reasons why Anohana might be or might not be for you.
Upon first viewing, much like my friends, I was drawn in by the animation. As episodes flew by I started to notice some themes throughout the story; perserverance, redemption, and the darkest of them all grief. Grief is easy to portray but hard to do well-enough to be emotionally gripping, but Anohana does it better than most. The main cast juggles all different types of pyschosis and trauma in a way that makes them both relatable and vulnerable at the same time. With their frivolous pursuit to honor their friend's wish and memory it's very hard not to relate to some if not all of them. Which is what makes this series an emotional rollercoaster and very rewatchable.
The cons of this anime are few and far between with subtle cliches and pacing being my minor gripe with the series. For 12 episodes it's both fast paced at times and terribly slow at others. For me, the cliches of grief doesn't affect the overall experience but it makes it a bit predictable at times. Sometimes the characters think and act irrationally even with the context of their emotional instability. Upon rewatching it was a lot more bearable but if you're watching Anohana only once you may have the same feelings I did initially.
In conclusion, Anohana will make you feel something whether you like it or not. Whether it be childhood summertime nostalgia or catharsis, you will laugh and cry and be moved by these brilliantly written characters (I related to Poppo the most.) If you like a great narrative or the stunning animation A-1 Studios is known for, then Anohana is for you. This anime is easily consumable whether you are a casual viewer or a anime connoisseur. Let your flowers of youth blossom in the sunshine of tomorrow. We found you Anohana!!!
Thank you for reading my review! Have a great rest of your day/evening.
