by Anarchy-chan they fight on, rescuing the missing Magical Blue, and Finding the missing Magical Pink. They have zany fights and adventures trying to unite the varied otaku groups and fight the SSC, led by the mysterious mastermind Shobon and his Anarchy-chan look alike known as Slayer.
The series has a few 1 major flaw that effects the writing of this series as a whole, a general lack of specificity that manifests in tonal inconsistency, vagueness about the villains motivations and goals, as well as what the very basic principles of this story's world are.
To begin with the series is vague about the magical girls' powers, what they can do and how. Most magical girl shows will at least give some basic phoned in explanation for this but we get no answer right away in favor of a cold opening right into the action. The extent and source of the magical girls' power is left vague from the very beginning, They appear capable of creating magical objects, causing explosions and other flashy moves, have super human strength and durability, and are even capable of having psychedelic dream battles through the use of unspecified drugs. All of that is fine until it is implied that they were created in a lab by the main villain, now some explanation of how you can create magical girls artificially in lab would have made this work fine, but no explanation is given.
Next, the Character motivations and goals are also fairly vague and empty. The resistance army's goals and motivations are fairly straight forward, they're otaku and desire the freedom to enjoy their hobbies, and are willing to fight for it. However the villain's motivation is not so clear, He showed up one day and seized political and military control in order to lock up otaku and destroy otaku culture under the pretext of preserving it (in concentration camps and warehouses apparently). From early on in the series it becomes apparent that Shobon and Slayer could easily crush the resistance if they wanted to, which calls his true goal into question as early as episode 3. later on we find out that his motivation and goal are that hw was an angry NEET who was trying to develop a video game, but it was not being well received by the online otaku, a mysterious goddess appears and tells him it looks interesting and that she want him to create a world for her because she's bored, she gives him power and 6 mysterious floating color blobs and he agrees to make a world for her, one where he can do whatever he wants to the people on the internet who told him his game wasn't very good.
The other of the petty villains have shallow or vague goals and motivations as well, such as the disgruntled gamer who is angry at the world because he was banned from some video games for using hacks, who is given the power to create a virtual world. Or the mentally unstable siblings with the older brother had his little sister kill him, but then was revived as a severed head. Even worse are the double agent characters who are revealed to be working for Shobon but are never given a reason for doing so.
How Shobon does anything he does is left vague, the true identity of the goddess is vague, whether or not they are even in the real world or only in a videogame is left vague. even the ending is very vague about what truly happened.
The tone is also inconsistent, though the premise is goofy, you see characters fighting with guns and explosives, yet there are no real or graphic deaths (except the mascot character constantly getting killed comedically) even of enemy grunts, except those of already defeated villains being finished off suddenly and violently by Slayer in episodes 3, 6 and 9. And then no more until the finale, where characters are shown being dramatically being defeated and apparently killed, only for them to be alive and ok in the next episode without even the basic "surprise I'm still alive" that you would expect. And then Otaku Hero being defeated and killed by Shobon and the corrupted magical girls in the last episode.
Besides that the fight scenes wound up being awkward uses of magically summoned objects more often than it should have. But I don't consider that a major flaw, though it does drop my rating of the series.
The first two or three episodes promised zany action in an over the top series with a crazy premise, it promised a story where we would see the value of fighting for the right to like what you like and to be yourself, and it seemed to promise some interesting twists as well. Having said all that, I still really wanted to like this series, the openings and endings were great, both visually and and the songs themselves, I also really liked the character designs, however the storytelling let the series down.

So far Oniimai has been my drug of the season. I very much enjoyed the manga so when I heard it was getting an anime version I was hopefully optimistic, and boy did that pay off.
I never expected it to get so much love in the art and animation department, this series is gorgeous to look at and the animation is beyond what I would ask for a slice of life comedy. normally I'm off put by significant art changes in an adaptation however I'm willing to let it slide in all but one instance in this series so far. The character design for ... Mar 30, 2022

I really wanted to like this show, I seriously did, it was however just plain bad.
Animation quality was fairly low effort, lots of CG for the monaters and summoned beasts, overall it would be passable if other elements of the show had come together better. The scenerey and background art was often times very awkward and generic. There was never a moment in the show where I thought the art was particularly good. The character design and art were ok, fairly straightforward adaptations from the manga. Mira in particular has a character design that I still really love, though sometimes they would randomly give her a ... |
