This is MAL. Certain anime are sacred and others unholy. You can't have certain opinions without getting a LOT of heat. That's fine. I've grown used to it by now. I've been on this site for years. At least I know most of the people that got so pissed off and can talk to them about it. Sometimes I get long tirades from random people, which is always less comfortable.
The manga is pretty great although the stories in each arc aren't that special. I think its more about the growth of Alita, her experiences and her perspective on the world than complex storytelling. The setting is also cool af and this is what the trailer does not capture at all. It makes it look all shiny and shit when in reality it should be grimey and dark. If you're interested, you could check out the OVA from 1993 which is pretty good although rushed and only covers the first 2 volumes.
I think the reason why many don't like is one reason why I like it. The characters have grown up and are pretty set in their ways so they don't progress throughout the 'story'. In fact, because its episodic it may turn people off as well.
I also agree about successful adaptations. Thing is, although I've not seen any, as you say, they don't look very good and their reviews are pretty poor. Having read Gunnm, I am not at all looking forward to Alita: Battle Angel.
That is a fair description of CB. Tbh, it doesn't feel like anime and that's what I love about it so much. I've never bothered to convince my friends to watch it because although a few have nothing against it AFAIK, the rest seem to have this preconceived notion of what its like because of these 'weird clips' you speak of so its easier to just feign ignorance to the medium in public (at this stage in my life at least) instead of admitting to watching 'weaboo shit'.
