I've been watching anime since some friends introduced me around 2001, although I suppose I could have been called a casual fan for most of that time. I generally only watched what other people showed me. Over the last few years I've started seeking out more and more on my own, especially thanks to online streaming. Even more recently I've really been watching quite a lot. I don't see that changing any time soon!
I can enjoy nearly any genre if the story is good, so I'll usually give any personal recommendation a try. I have an extremely strong bias towards subtitles, I almost never watch dubbed anime. If I had to name a favorite genre, I'd say that I really enjoy a story which makes me think. Beyond that I particularly like action, gore, and psychological twists, but I've been known to enjoy the occasional light high-school, ecchi, or even harem (most of which have been recommended by friends). Sometimes it's all about the right mood or if the show makes me laugh. Other times one aspect I'm not that into might be made up for by another which I do enjoy. I'll usually finish what I start, even if it's not the best I've seen. I just know what I like when I see it. I've even surprised myself on occasion.
I'm on MAL mostly for tracking what I see, although I've also found it helpful for finding new shows to watch. I doubt I'll ever participate in reviewing, mostly because what I enjoy and how I rate is so subjective. I'd rather enjoy the moment than over-analyze what I'm seeing/hearing.
