It has been years since I have watched the original Clannad. I have stumbled upon this once while rekindling my interest in the first series. I have never found a story so compelling with remarkably true to life characters, I found myself in tears almost every time.
This series also expanded on the story during the Clannad "Movie". If you have watched it, you start to realize the similarities, and I was then brought to tears as soon as I watched that ending theme because I knew who that was, and it was both refreshing and disheartening. I continued on to find that it had

an amazing build up, right up to Episode 18, where the series climaxed into one of the most memorable scenes in Anime for those who watched this.
Some people would agree that the series should end there, and that they should have lightly touched up the after affects, but the bitter-sweetness of the following episodes were just as perfect. I was brought to tears in each episode. Relating to the themes on each, right up to the Episode 21, where it once again decided to put you in that emotional 'roller-coaster' as one would say. But I felt it should have ended at when the Main character finally confronts his problems in Episodes 19-20 (which in my opinion should have ended in 20), bringing in the very first time I realized how much it relates to so many people. I had even called my loved one in tears as soon as I saw this, realizing that I would be exactly the same without that person in my life.
I would agree with the number of people who found the final episode of the season fairly undramatic, and 'too convenient', for the well built plot. Instead of the bittersweet ending that would give you thoughts, you would get an absolute happy ending, where somehow the climax was reversed on its head and followed by a typical montage of how this 'new life', as it were, was.
Overall it brings back fond memories of the first season, I felt the need to re-watch before tackling this anime again. I'm fairly late in the grand scheme of things, but this one of those animes that will stand the test of time, with a story almost everyone can relate to in a certain way. Even now it brings tears to think of those possibilities brought up in the anime.
