The score i've given is relative to other novels of this genre.
To start with the negatives, the illustrations are unacceptable. The main character is meant to have blonde shadow root hair, there's a whole chapter dedicated to this topic. He's also meant to have below average looks, I'm not saying make him ugly but thin eyes or something. I read this novel on ‘syosetsu.com’ and have only skimmed through the first two published novels so I don't know if it gets better, but I doubt it. I doubt the illustrator has even read the novel. The character designs, composition and even the choices of
...
which scenes to illustrate feels so low effort, at least pretend to care.
Similarly the quality of the manga adaptation is disappointing. I can't find a reason to justify it's existence.
The story starts off mediocre. However as the story gradually pushes the protagonist into the more dramatic school politics you start to appreciate the slow beginning as it helped build up the characters and ground the story. Even in the later parts the main focus and appeal of the novel remains to be the characters.
Especially the main character Sajou he's dumb but somewhat reliable and incredibly likable. He and I have hardly any resemblance and yet I can still relate to him because he feels genuine. A main character of this novel but not of it's world. The same thing can be said about the main love interest Natsukawa. I don’t roll around in my bed for any girl. I won't pitch the story or praise it anymore since it’s best if your expectations are low.
Conclusion:
MAL rankings have heavily influenced my enjoyment of shows. I can't help but cringe at high-school harem shows that first got me into anime. This novel is one of the very few that can still give me that nostalgic feeling and would love it if more people discover this novel.
