Well…. That was really disappointing.
It seems that Macross has this thread of one good series, then one bad and then another good one ( hopefully the next one will be good)
I loved SDF Macross , it’s one of the best shows I have watched, then Macross plus was another bang. I watched Macross zero and even thou it wasn’t that good, at least it was decent. However, then came Macross Seven and ruined the franchised for me. After that awful series which I dropped after 7 chapters I dropped the franchised in disappointment, never cared to watch the next one as I
...
thought that after Macross Seven the franchised was dead and nothing good will come out of it.
Then one day in my boredom I decided to give Frontier a change and OH boy… was I wrong, Frontier was really good, loved it. Then I decided to watch delta after being hyped by frontier, only to be disappointed once again.
So here is a little rundown of Macross delta .
Pros:
Character designs are really good, nice and colorful.
Animation on the characters can look really good at times.
And… that’s about it…
Cons:
They turned the idols into magical girls… that actively fight and dance and sing … IN THE MIDDLE OF THE WAR ZONE, while people sheer for them… again IN THE MIDDLE OF THE WAR ZONE. Idols in Macross have an important role, but it always felt realistic ( in Macross universe context that is ) as they were support for the pilots with their music… not doing magic tricks on the battlefield.
Music is not that good, not one single song stuck to me as on the previous shows, Macross Seven dispite being awful has the best songs in my opinion
Characters are really boring and uncharismatic, all the characters are archetypes and they stick to that archetype during the run of the series, in turn making the love triangle boring as I do not care for any of the characters.
Mechs look … horrible, how come the Valkyries from frontier ( 2008 ) look better than the valkiries on a 2016 show? That’s beyond my comprehension.
And over all the series is … boring, it has no soul, I’ll put it at the very button of the franchise. At least Macross 7 had awesome music going for it …

There are Shows that take over the top spot of the season, there are others that take the first place during their year of release and then, there are animes that transience even that, animes like Full metal alchemist Brotherhood , Code Geass, Death note or Tenguen toppa Guren lagan. we see those animes once every five or so years. Made in abyss is here to stay in our memory, right next to those ground breaking titles, I'm confident to say that Made in abyss is going to amused you and surprise you in many different ways
From the moment we see Riko (
...
our main protagonist ) exploring a labyrinth of caves and trees, you can feel you are in for something special, then the music hits you and from that point you can't look away your screen. The breath taking landscapes and backgrounds immerse you in this mysterious world, making you want to know what is ahead.
The character's desing will make some people errouneusly take this as a friendly kid's show and yes, it looks cute and inocent, but beneath the cute looks and adorable character desings there is a rather dark and sometimes hard to watch story of sacrifice and lost.
Some of the most memorable moments, however, are when we are in company of our main protagonist, a child named Riko and her newly found friend a robot named Reg. the chemistry and friendship between the two grows on the you the more you watch the show.
Another aspect that is worth mentioning is the magnificent music, melancholic and beautiful ambiance songs plays during our decent to the abyss, it gives the Anime another layer of polish and reminds you that this is a passion project from the sound team. Especial mention to the song
"Hanezeve Caradhina" that plays during two important moments of the series, notably during the 8th episode which I can assure you, it will break your very soul.
Another important aspect that needs to be mentioned and that some people may find a little offputting, is the cruelty and sometimes sexualisation of characters which are mere children of no more than 12 years old. Some people may find that aspect distracting or down right wrong, but, there isn't any explicit scenes during the series run in regards to sexuality it's more or less just hinted, however, the other aspect in question ( blood and gore towards children) it's very present but treated as a plot progression devise not as gratuitous violence for the sake of the shock factor.
finally be aware that this is not a complete story. The anime finished on a cliff hanger and at least for now there is no official confirmation in regards to a second season, hence, you may be ready to catch up with the manga once you finish the anime if you want to know what happens with these lovable characters in their quest to go down the abyss.
Made in abyss surprised the community when it arrived, and for very good reasons, its unique take on the adventure genre is both fresh and captivating at the same time, it's amazing animation, sound and creature design, the intriguing lore around the abyss, the amazing plot and character's progression, it all combines in one hell of a ride that you will not forget for a very long time.

Macross......Macross... Macross
Some time ago, circa 2012 I decided I wanted to watch the original Japaneses Macross series, as all I had watched before was the heavily edited Robotech, some friends advised me that Macross was a good watch, so I decided to give it a try, what I found out was a masterful crafted tale of romance, drama, comedy and self discovery that I have seen just a couple of times before with shows like code geass, eureka seven and full metal alchemist, Macross blew me away with excitement so, of course a wanted to see what the franchise had to offer, I was
...
super exited to dive in on this amazing universe and experience new adventures after the final credits rolled for SDF Macross, so I watched the next one, Macross plus and OH BOY was it good !!!! at that point my excitement for the series was beyond comprehension, first series was GREAT and its follow up Macross Plus was UBER GREAT , what can possible go wrong with the series ?? Macross 7 that is ...
Ok so Macross 7 takes place decades after the original series as mankind is expanding to next horizons in space in order to preserve the human race in case another attack like the one that happened on the first series exterminates humanity. We are aboard a giant ship crossing the universe looking for a suitable new home in command of captain Maximilian Jenius (yes, the awesome pilot from the first series who looks inexplicable young after all the decades between the first series and Macross 7 )
Then we have the music band that is a staple on the Macross franchise, which, is composed of a rude black guy, an almost non existing drums guy...or girl I don't know, with little to no personality, a beautiful girl a la Mimmei, who is also captain Jenius's daughter ( but not the one Jenius and Milla had on the original series, that one is not even in the show ) and then we have .... Basara... our main protagonist who is an spoiled brad who thinks he is super special and that he can solve every problem by singing his pop/rock songs ... IN THE MIDDLE OF A BATTLE!!! ... clearly inspired by Lin Mimmey from the first series, however, while Mimmey warmed the hearts of humans and zentradi unknowingly, Basara is constantly trying to make people listen to his songs and to like them by force, he goes in the middle of an space battle with his guitar controlled mech ( yes it is as stupid as it sounds ) only to get frustrated at people not listening to his songs. it takes little time before you start hating on this guy, however, I'll have to admit some of his songs are actually catchy.
Then we have the animation... oh boy oh boy.. while the first Macross was very inconsistent with the animation ( some times it looked great for the time, some other times it looked horrible complete with badly draw faces ) it has the excused of being an 1982 anime and for the time, it accomplishes some very impressing animation sometimes. then we have Macross plus, while obviously a high budget OVA series with fantastic animation it came out on 1994 with animation that was very ahead for its time ( even for a high budget ova series standard ) then we have Macross 7, of course it didn't had a great budget and it was proposed as a long series with more than 40 chapters but its unexcusable at how bad the animation can get . Let me tell you something that happened to me by chapter 5 or 6 of the series. On the second battle against the aliens on space the anime started to used the same exact animations they used during the first battle, whole scenes were literally re used from that first battle to the point I didn't know if I was watching a flash back or new events, that was lazy and very mediocre and it wasn't only that time, reused scenes were used during almost all the chapters I endure while watching this abomination.
Overall this series killed the franchise for me as I did some research Macross 7's story is very important to the Macross universe expanding over movies, manga and Ovas, so if I wanted to continue watching the next series on the Macross franchise I needed to finish this garbage and that is something I can't see myself doing unfortunately ( although some have told me the newer series are not all that great )
It is a real shame I really wanted to like this show but that was nearly impossible and my love for the series will remain split between the original, Macross plus and Macross 0 ( prequel to the original )

BERSERK... what they did to you?
When I first hear of this new anime adaptation of the extremely geourgeos manga of the same name I was super excited, I've been reading Berserk for 13 years now, then I watch the trailer... it looked bad yes, however, I said to myself " OK come on, it is CG I know, but the movies look good and those are CG as well, if they keep the beautiful CG from the movies there will be no problem" ... how naive I was.
lets start by the obvious this is a fantastical history, because Kentaro Miura's manga has an amazing
...
history to tell, however, viewers need to know that this is a continuation of the first Berserk arc ( golden age ) hence, if you haven't watch or read the original arc you'll be completely lost here. Does the anime tells the history on a compeling and understanbable way? no...this awful anime's director doesn't know how to tell the amazing Berserk story. several important panels from the manga were omitted and that may be confusing for viewers not familiar with the source material. scenes just happen ramdonly without much context as to why or what is happening on screen. the way the director tell the story here is very confusing. however, it's Berserk, the amazing mythos created by Miura is still here... it's just not that polish as in the original source.
Let's talk Sound desing shall we?
"CLANK" if you watched the anime ( DONT DO IT ) you know what that means, The overall sound effects are awful or even worse ... non existing, it is awfully weird to see something in screen without its corresponding sound effect, for example: somebody falling to the ground without producing any sound, people opening their mouths just to not make any sound ( at least we do not hear it ) pleople grabiing things that do not produce any sound, makes the impresion that nothing exist or have weight withing this world.
Songs are ok...ish I guess, just one Susumo Hirasawa's song thou. and the opening and ending are very forgettable
Visuals:
Not much to say that hasn't been said ... yes, it is HORRIBLE, unappealing backgrounds, awful and weird animations that does not match the audio. almost non existing facial expressions, dead eye CG models even for the main characters, camera's movements that will make you eyes bleed diarrhea and so on. Definitely the worst aspect of the series by a large margin
It takes little to no effort to realize how bad this adaptation was crafted. It's painful to see one of the greatest manga of all time not being properly adapted to anime, let's be honest, 90's adaptation was not all that good but at least that one had the excuse of being made with the limited technology of the time ( which is not all that excusable because Yu yu hakusho, Gundam wing, evangelion and many other amazing looking anime were created round the same time) but it sure was better that this monstrosity...

Want to watch a completely boring and nonsensical anime with beautiful animation and a decent soundtrack? well... GC might be just for you.
featuring your average emo kid (of course it cannot be the other way around )who gets himself involved in a terrorist attack and discovers that his favorite pop singer is ... A terrorist!! this pop singer is your standart beautiful, short spoken, cutie Lolita, like the ones you see in almost 98% of every modern anime however,GC choose to put that boring character at the center of the history. Giving us the deligfull combination of Emo clueless guy and a boring
...
Lolita who will later be used as echii material for the main character's amusement.
that's it for the main characters but what happnes to the rest of the cast? not much to say, you have your usual misterius bad ass anarquist lider from the terrorist, some more beatufil ladies for eye candy sake and even an oversexualized 13 years old child who controls the flow of battle by playing candy crush with her butt.
Lets mention the inconsistency of things happening on screen, like the fact that seconds after receiving his magical powers from Lolita singer, the main character ( who did no even knew how to trow a punch at that point) is fighting like if he was cloud in the final fantasy VII Advent Children movie ... or the fact that by chapter 3 the main character is pulling up refrigerators and scissors from people's chest ( yes... you read that right ) with no previous explanation as to why he is able to do that or why do people have those things inside of them...
Now I have to admit that the art is just beautiful and the animation is top notch even compared to more recent shows and probably the main reason for people to start watching the show ( that was my case at least) the music is sometimes ok...ish, and sometimes it's really good.
Over all this is an anime in the same vein of Kabaneri of the Iron fortress ( 2016 ) really beautiful animation and character's design but lacking any substance to it. just a bland animation test...
