(I'm not sure if this would be considered a spoiler so I will pre-warn that I will give my opinion on the ending without spoiling what happens)
I'm not usually into historical, martial arts kind of anime, but this one caught my eye because I saw a clip of a fighting scene that gave me enough chills to want to give it a chance. The unique art style and twisted execution certainly never failed to keep my attention, but then the ending happened and it was like a slap in my face that completely spun
...
me in the other direction.
Let me just say that this anime has a pretty basic storyline, the protagonist meets someone who interrupts his daily, meaningless life and together they decide to go on a journey which lead them to follow their true destiny. If that was all there was to this anime then it wouldn't have gotten so many high reviews. The plot is what brings this story to life, the chain of events that take place, the character development, the journey itself. This anime is heavy on dialogue and it is a bit much sometimes, but I found that the communication between the characters added to its abstract nature. Nothing that took place really made sense in the usual way yet the characters all seemed to understand each other regardless and I could feel myself making sense of it too.
But then the ending came crashing down! It took away all meaning there could have been to all of these events and the character development was completely thrown back in the water. It was like being a spectator to a world that one day disappeared before my very eyes!!
Overall, this anime is a corrupted gem so watch it at your own peril :'(

I'm sorry, but this anime is so overrated. After all of the hype people were giving me about it, I was expecting a lot more...substance. Honestly, it started getting weird for me from episode 9 on. After that it just felt like a period where I was watching a completely different anime from what I had started with and there was so much fluff that I couldn't see through it! I feel like no depth was added to the story which is sad because it had so much potential. Instead I watched a bunch

of psychos stuck in the twilight zone. 'Nuff said.
Overall, this could've been a great story, but it failed to be one.

Looking back on everything that has happened, I can say that this anime put me on a journey that no other anime has put me on before. It really makes one rethink our morals as human beings and the way we treat other living creatures, even ourselves. I like that this anime was not afraid to jump into the unknown of storytelling, especially one of a totalitarian society. It did its best to fit a lot of realistic depth and meaning into those 25 episodes and in my opinion, it was very well done.
...
The amount of symbolism incorporated with not only the story itself, but the art, music and characters really proved that the creators were not just trying to put a veil on fudged work. There was a lot going on and yes even though I do feel like there were some plot holes, they at least addressed what they needed to address in a satisfactory manner. I would like to name some specific examples on how this anime was able to take things to a new level, but for the sake of keeping this spoiler-free, I say just keep the things I've stated in mind and point them out for yourself! Go watch!

I feel sorry for anyone who walked into this anime without reading any of the reviews first and had high expectations for it because they're in for a BIG disappointment.
Story- I think the plot is decent. From the four episodes I saw, I got the typical "the protagonist is the chosen one who will fulfill the prophesy and save the world" kind of vibe. Of course he gets mixed up with someone with their own issues in a world unknown to him and then he accidentally becomes special. That's all fine and dandy, but the problem is that the story is rushed and sloppy.
...
They didn't even take the time to properly introduce the main characters or give a decent view of the school they were attending much less the town they lived in (and it gets disregarded after the first few minutes anyway). The main characters get pulled out of nowhere and suddenly involved in a battle with the stranger Takashi (the protagonist) meets and then (spoiler alert) they all become magicians. This all happened in the first episode. By the 4th episode you could have gotten the impression that they've already fought in countless battles together. Takashi and the girl he meets suddenly have a 10 episode bond.
Art- It's nice, but they don't give proper visuals of their surroundings. Sure you'll know that they're in a school, but you'll have no idea what it looks like, where it's located and then they just skip ahead to wherever it is that the characters end up. Somehow Takashi just knows where Mui is in a world he's never navigated around before. Basically, there isn't even enough to leave to the imagination.
Sound- The voice actors seemed appropriate to me and I liked the the opening and ending theme music. The back tracks were all typical and boring. Seriously, I predicted what they would all sound similar to before they started.
Character- Their personalities are pretty clear, but I can't say much because I only saw 4 episodes.
Enjoyment- I was really hyped up in the beginning and actually enjoyed the first episode, but then they went ahead and made everything cliche and mediocre.
Overall- It's a 4, with this kind of plot it could have been great with its own unique twists. The concepts of magic like the different types that exists and how things became the way they are today was well explained, but they just didn't bring it to the next level I was expecting it to reach.
