Thank you for friend request and the kind words about my (now-decade-old) review of Madoka. It still does make me smile to know that people care about the ramblings I wrote when I was a college freshman with way too much time on his hands.
Insofar as recommendations are concerned, I honestly don't have much to provide (believe it or not). Without the aid of internet communities, my exposure to anime would've been limited to whatever [adult swim] used to air on Cartoon Network between 2003-2013ish. As for manga, my exposure to that would've been limited to whatever was available in the manga section of my local library once upon a time.
If I could give you a tip: don't put too much stock into the opinions and musings of some guy. I gave plenty of lauded shows like Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Mushishi, and Monster a watch and... they're not totally without merit, but I came out of those shows extremely underwhelmed. That was after I read glowing reviews and was like "okay, let's give it a whirl." Plus, plenty of "bad" anime that's universally maligned here on MAL (i.e. Gantz, Elfen Lied) are among my all-time favourites because of how grotesque and over-the-top they are.
