This is the first time I have ever had to just drop something One Piece related. Look, I wasn't a huge fan of the Skypiea arc to begin with, but this 'Episode of:' was just terrible and god-awful boring. I could only sit through half of it before giving up.
Condensing an arc THAT big into such a limited time can be difficult, so I understand needing to be a bit choppy, but this was over the top. Watching this felt less like watching a story/arc, and more like looking at a check list of things that happened. That is completely boring to watch, and
...
seems kind of pointless even bothering to make this if its impossible to get any kind of entertainment out of it since all you're getting are the facts. It was incredibly choppy covering main events (which were therefore not well explained, some points not being explained at all, it was like getting the answer to a mystery no one told me about), and therefore the narrative was all over the place.
Time management was shoddy, they spent a long time focusing on the background of the current story, and therefore didn't have enough time to adapt the actual CURRENT story. Furthermore, they didn't even bother to animate the entire background scene- they literally just took a huge clip from the original anime and put it in, again making me wonder what the point of making this was.
Look, if you've seen/read One Piece and you enjoy watching these reanimation stuff, dont bother watching this. There is absolutely no entertainment value, they didn't even keep in the best parts of the arc- the jokes. Recaps can still be entertaining; this one really wasn't. And if you haven't seen One Piece before- or you currently are and just wanted to skip all the episodes for the Skypiea arc (its an essential arc so I wouldn't skip it anyway), just go read a synopsis of what happens in it- you get the same exact amount of information without having to sit through a near 2 hour long 'Episode of:'.
Tl;Dr: There is no story, only an animated list. Art half the time was old animation. Sounds are the usual old music. There were no time for characters to be themselves. Got absolutely no enjoyment from it seeing as they purposely took out anything that can be enjoyed from it (it even lacks a sense of nostalgia). Overall, you'll get more from reading a wiki page of this arc than you will from this.

I absolutely LOVED this. It was new, it was different, quite often I was taken aback by surprise, and the subtle character development was insane. Usually, shoujo romance mangas are quite predictable- you have a girl, you know who shes going to fall in love with, and you know that no matter who else comes into the story she will most definitely get with the first guy by the end. Knowing this kind of shoujo cliche, it was what I expected to find, and that was what I wanted (especially ones with love triangles, which HNR has).
HNR was so different to this. For a shoujo,
...
it was much more realistic than the usual cliche ones. Half way through the manga, I had no idea who the protag would end up with, if she was even going to end up with either of them, and even by the second-to-last chapter, I still had no idea who she would pick.
STORY:
The plot itself is quite simple- our young high school protag moves to the city, and is caught in a love triangle between her teacher and her friend. And yet the story took so many different unexpected turns. There are as many love rejections as there are love confessions, and the relationship that the protag has with each of her potential love interests are unique. Where the usual shoujo would define the fact that the protag has her one and only love, HNR shows that life isn't like that, especially for a young woman who is subject to change. She doesn't have to have only one love, and she doesn't need to experience everything at the same time.
I have seen a lot of opinions by people who read this and have noticed that a lot of people, despite really loving the series, were unhappy with the end result- I personally think that maybe some of these people were expecting the usual shoujo outcome; simple romantic love. But HNR was so much more complicated than that, it often displayed a theme of how love can change, especially when one is so young (who often make up a large portion of the shoujo audience).
CHARACTERS:
The protagonist, who is a young girl, gradually changes, gradually matures and her preferences change, just like any other girl her age. She is not a blushing annoying mess, and she isn't a kind saint who touches the hearts of everyone she meets. She's chill. Shes average even, to a point. Personally, I found that a lot more relatable and I enjoyed having a character who, unlike some other popular shoujo protags I could name, did not always act on the wishes and the feelings of her love. She acted on her own wishes, and despite her forgiving nature, that didn't mean she always went by the flow of her love interests emotions, she made choices for herself, at times these choices were decisions I rarely see in shoujo romance mangas.
Her friends, for once, were also pretty realistic. They had their own romances, some that changed over time. They didn't do everything they could to support their friend, they listened to her woes and let her sort out the rest on her own. They didn't have to tell each other everything, and they didn't need to actively set things up for each other- they were normal friends.
And of course, for the male loves- they were imperfect. Many shoujo men are rude or whatever and we all like to find it cute when he treats the protag differently for once- this is not what it is in HNR. Their imperfections could leave you seriously questioning their character, and its cool to see for once that they're not always charming, or become charming later- they act depending on what they want, and some of these things they come to regret but they never change. Saying that, I quite enjoyed both characters, and at times I was seriously torn because they were both great characters, and they both had different relationships with the protag that made me feel differently.
ART:
I liked it. Did I love it? No, but the mangakas art style was really cute for some characters, and the overall look of it was quite nice. I don't tend to take too much notice in the art of a manga, so this part is quite small aha.
OVERALL:
Incredible. If you are looking for the usual read and don't really want something that realistic or uncommon, I would still recommend you read it because there were some incredible memorable scenes and the excitement of a forbidden romance, and a more simple but heart wrenching romance, are all present. Whether you tend to root for the first guy or the underdog guy, either way you will be pleased with what you get in this manga.

Overall, I'm giving this anime a 9 but to be honest, I have no idea how I would rate this anime. This anime was, well an experience. A massive rollercoaster of an anime. Before watching this, I had assumed it would be a little bit sad, a bit funny and really cute. It IS sad, it IS funny, and it IS cute, but more than those, it was appalling and dramatic and disturbing and confusing. For a while, the anime was a big mess. It starts off for a while quite light and bit annoying and comedic, and then it goes suddenly dark and disturbing,
...
and then confusing and then appalling and then sad and yes it was a massive mess and I really didn't like how it was for a while.
That being said, I think the most satisfying part about this anime was how it unraveled the massive mess it made, and by the end of it, I really liked the anime as a whole. It gave me numerous genres and feelings throughout it all, but by the end I was finally satisfied with the whole thing- similar to when your earphones get all tangled into a massive mess and once you finally get it all unraveled you end up quite happy simply because you finally sorted it out, a feeling you wouldn't have had without the big mess in the first place. And in case anyone is confused by my review, the basic message is that it was a good anime due to way it sorted out its own story.
The art was really cute, the soundtrack was interesting, and I'm not quite sure whether I enjoyed the anime or not, but I am certainly glad that I watched it.
The only thing I still never really got into were the characters, which can be a big turn off for a lot of people. It's not that the characters were bad or easy-to-hate, they just weren't characters I personally enjoyed or liked, except for Shouma. Though the interesting thing about the characters is that there is a TONNE of character development in this anime, though for half of the characters that wasn't a good thing- for some characters I started off disliking them, then hating them and then really liking them, where with some other characters I went from liking them to really disliking them or even getting to the point where I just couldn't understand them.
Overall, if you want a memorable anime that makes you think a lot, and question your own opinion about characters or themes or storylines and you are seeking something complex, I would definitely recommend this anime. I would not recommend if you are looking only for a light story to watch, as I had originally thought this anime would be. Its a good anime, but I could easily understand how some people would love it, and how others could hate it.

Before I started watching this series, I hated pirates. I thought One Piece looked ridiculous and I refused to watch a show that looked silly and cheesy (like how other animes get super cheesy about friendship).
Now, every one makes fun of me for ever thinking that this show would suck in the first place. I have spent so much money on this shows merch, and I can't even say how many times I have rewatched this show and read the manga. I think about this series 24/7.
Its funny, inspirational, exciting and sad, but mostly what I love One Piece for is its development. It started
...
off as a very simple anime, where everyone was happy and looking towards their goals and the show was very simple to watch. And then it really developed into something more heartwrenching and complicated- I never would have guessed from the beginning of this series how much I would love the characters and how sad it would be, and how much it would make me cry or accidentally hit my head on the wall behind me numerous times cause I get so excited. And if the animation really bugs you, I promise that the art develops too.
And the best thing is, is that all of these tiny hints have been there since the beginning of the series! It's really great noticing something near the start of the show and then realizing much later on how important that small scene was!
I love One Piece to bits- its funny, sweet and yet still has a dark, sad feature to it all. 10/10.

I'll be honest, I'm not usually into stories with psychological and slice of life themes (I tend to stick with the shounens and the comedies etc.) but you really don't need to be into any of those themes to be able to enjoy this. Well, 'enjoy' isn't really the right word to use, but you'll know what I mean if you've read it. It's incredibly creative, sweet at times yet shockingly dark or depressive in others- all I can say is that both during and after I finished this I felt like I had a completely new outlook on things; it was most probably the
...
most interesting manga I have ever read.
