<<may contain minor spoilers and a lot of anger>>
I've been searching through my anime history and this thing popped up once again. And it did what it does the best, infuriated me.
What exactly is this anime? Shortly, infuriating.
That is absolutely the best way to describe Re:Zero and its main character. And it honestly should be a new anime genre even if just for this one anime.
You may ask why? Well, that is simple, because other genres don't really suit Re:Zero.
You can see the genres it should have and pretends to have overthere on the left side but it actually has only one of them and
...
that is Fantasy. But that isn't hard to get right.
So let's talk about the rest:
Drama. Why wouldn't I describe this as Drama? Because in Drama it often boils down to a certain character going through hardships. Well, that is present in Re:Zero. But there is a slight problem. You have to care about that certain character to actually feel the Drama, the tension, the emotions. You don't really have that in Re:Zero though as our main character very quickly establishes himself as one of the most annoying and borderline despicable anime characters ever. So it is quite hard to feel bad for him and not to just watch the anime unfold and all of the torture happen without actual joy from our main character's suffering. Because that is exactly what happened to me. Instead of caring about the main character I genuinely started to be joyful whenever something bad happened to him as I despised him with passion. That is why I wouldn't say that Re:Zero is a Drama, more on the line of torture porn, to be honest. Next!
Thriller. Why wouldn't I describe this as Thriller? Once again, because Thriller is based on giving viewers heightened feelings of suspense, excitement, surprise, anticipation and anxiety, as defined by Wikipedia. You can probably already tell the problem. In order to feel most of these you'd have to care about the characters. At least to some degree. You probably won't in Re:Zero. At best I can say that I felt a little squirmy sometimes because of sudden gore but after a while I became numb to that too as gore in Re:Zero is too often without any real impact because our main character goes back in time and sets it straight leaving everyone unharmed until he messes something else up. Is Re:Zero a gore fest? Yes. Is Re:Zero a Thriller? No. Next!
Psychological. Why wouldn't I describe this as Psychological? First of all, psychological genre is about characters and characters in Re:Zero are weak, like really weak. I could tell you less about them at the end of the series than about characters from different anime just after the first episode. Describing them as onedimensional would be maybe giving them a little too many dimensions. There is no feeling of any of them being actually unique anime character or even well developed. And secondly, psychological genre is also about inner reaction and questions to outer unusual happening, simply put. The problem is that there are only like two actual psychological questions in this anime and they are both repeated so many times you are going to feel like you live in a world of Déjà vu. And these questions are "what would happen to you if you experienced death repeatedly?" and "what would happen to you if there was to happen something even worse than your own death?". And to be honest those are quite good questions for about 2-5 episodes of an anime. Not 25...
Overall this review is subjective. If you want objective one just look at the ratings I gave it with the exception of Overall as that one is once again subjective.
If you want to enjoy this series I recommend one thing, don't binge watch it. Watch one episode per week. You will do yourself a favor.
