Higurashi no naku koro ni is probably the best written and thought through anime ever made. At a push, undoubtedly the best. Why? Not just because it is a blend of two of the hardest genres to make. Because it's different.
Story:
Like every other typical horror anime, they use high school to push things into the depths of misery and antics that happen within. Even with death note, mirai nikki and deadman wonderland, if high school wasn't the original setting the show never would've happened. Although Higurashi involves a school, it is nowhere near the level of high school and holds around 15 people of all

ages, and the show could've been good even without it. Is it set in a city? No. It's set in a peaceful and quiet village. It's the way that the writers have started from complete scratch and made something completely different that astounded me. I don't even need to get on how phenomenal the plot is and how brilliant and enjoyable it is.
Art:
Now let's just get across the fact that the animation isn't the greatest thing about this show. It's annoying watching ordinary talking scenes with complete out-of-proportion people, not going to lie about that. But with the hilarious faces and the moe parts, I got used to it and decided it was a good part about this show. It really outlined the torture scenes and made some of it hilarious and almost laugh-out-loud funny, so I'm going to give this a solid 8.
Sound:
Now this is where this anime really shines. If i recall my sources correctly, this anime's OS was written by the genius Kenji Kawai, which is a culture change from his other work. Let's just say he delivered. It has the greatest depressing anime song of all time, and really added to some of the more neutral scenes, which is nice as in normal anime the background stuff of those scenes are neglected. It's a 9 for sound from me.
Character:
This show has two of my top 5 characters. Rena, and Keiichi. Shion is at a push in my top ten, with Mion, Takano and Oishii all within my top 20. So, why is this so low? One word: Rika. Oh my god I absolutely hated her. How this stupid little space filler is just randomly assigned into this fortune-teller godly role. And she was also a total bitch at the best of times, and a rather large slacker. It would be 9, but since Rika occurred, it's an 8.
Enjoyment is self-explanatory. An obcious 10.
Conclusion? Don't need one. If you're thinking about watching it, just do it, no matter what genre.
