It is a nebulous state of being.

And how was the wedding?
yutanpo Nov 5, 2011 1:40 AM
Hmm.. I'm gonna try to finish it tonight so I'll let you know how it goes.

Chiaki is great, as is Kana. Yeah the only thing I didn't like about season 2 was the art and Milhouse, but otherwise they're all pretty enjoyable, although season 1 particularly stands out. I do get ticked off when people bitch about how 2 and 3 suck though.

I didn't mean harsh in a bad way! It's very fair to actually rate on a 1-10 scale. I would be one of the ones who gave a 7 that which deserved a 4 or 3, which is really one of the reasons I do not rate. One question, though. By perfect do you mean technically (story, art, character development, etc.) or pure enjoyment? I'm guessing it's a mix of both but more the latter. 'Scool, and I get the logic of skipping 9. It's a pretty fuzzy number.

That scene is amazing and confirms my adoration. I also enjoyed her in episode 6, when she stands up in class, majestically raises her arms, and makes a confirming circle--only to cross them emphatically. "No, I don't like such fake people!" It would be something to meet someone as genuinely alive as Minorin.

Are you Buddhist? I'm something of a Vipassanā practitioner, when I'm mindful of it. Haha. I wouldn't make a good Theravada Buddhist, though, seeing as practicing lesbianism is pretty much breaking the third precept.

Aw, that's kinda sad. Miki as villain... I guess she is the one who throws a wrench in it most of the time!

Yes, I have seen Tokyo Story. My favorite scene was when Kyoko says to Noriko, "Life is such a disappointment," and Noriko smiles her sad, sad smile and says, "Yes, it is." I think that's how it goes anyway. And then the father at the end broke my heart... I hadn't seen anything directed by Ozu before, but I enjoyed it immensely. He's good at framing a scene. What made you ask? Did you like it?

I joined The Way of the 2D because I belieeeeve~. I'm actually on a year-long (at least) spiritual quest to be more 2D onee-sama-like: graceful, forgiving, learned, and kind. You may laugh at my hopelessness, but it came to me in a moment of desperation. I figure that even if I wasted most of my life goofing around, I can move forward with the hope that my early 20s will be the cocoon from which I will emerge an adult butterfly. :p

I tweeted @ her all of my love and affection haha. I never go on twitter but I figured since you asked... Her twitpics have some interesting work-in-progress shots. Check them out if you haven't yet. Also she eats a buttload of sweets apparently, cuute.

Aw, that story about the game makes me sad. I've learned that sometimes, no matter how good you try to be, there will be people who fucking haate you just because of how you look. It could be that your family is exceptionally unsightly? I kid. But really so many people are racist and sexist and looksist, it's unsurprising but so disheartening when they show their true colors. I think I'd love to hang out with your family, they sound like fun goofballs. And according to my pop-pop, the Phillies never sucked, y'hear?

Yeah, I see that a 4 from you isn't so bad. You're quite a harsh rater compared to some! But I also understand your need to enumerate. My best friend is a compulsive list-writer, can't go five minutes in a waiting room without making a list of "People in this Room from Most to Least Boring" etc. I'm usually last. I have a type of pride in things I really love too, like Haibane Renmei. When someone says they love it too, I think, "Yay, one more person to cherish these characters!"

When it comes to romance, I do get mushy even if the characters are lackluster. Male protagonists in anime and manga tend to be blank pages for the viewer to write themselves on, which does take me out of it. I think in Toradora!, for example, that Ryuuji is not one of those so much. He's still a tsukkomi, like many of them are, but he has a few facets that make him likeable. However, I haven't watched this show all the way through, so he may change for the worse. It feels like the very beginning of the OP is the most male-gazey thing ever, too... And Taiga. I don't like tsunderes. I'll watch it anyway because I like the idea of Minorin getting with Ami.

Mmm wow do they carry the joke well through that many volumes? That'd be quite some talent. I don't mind spoilers so please divulge! I will read it someday, though.

I've started reading from the time skip, what do you suggest?

I saw the soap opera as kind of bubbling beneath the surface throughout. I could kind of understand their crying and screaming at the very end--hell, I would do the same if I saw a dead friend "alive" in front of me--but I think the director, or whoever, held that note for too long, if you know what I mean. Basically the series is not my favorite thing ever by a long shot, but that first episode especially bought a lot of good will from me.

Why can't you stand het/yaoi stuff? I'm almost to that point myself; I want to see stuff that's real and sweet and honest, unlike a lot of what happens in real life. And seeing two girls/women beat the odds and love each other is wonderful.

I'm excited to read Sangatsu no Lion! I love her art, it's just so squishy!

I saw Ichiro get to second in like 5 seconds, he's so freaking fast. The Phillies? You live there? I grew up in North Wales. Do you go to games often? Any interesting anecdotes?

Also, I wish I was Miki-chan. She's so amazing and funny. I like how Megumi says "gokigenyou" like such a soeur. Noice.

Ah, I watched one episode of Kanamemo and was immediately turned off. Like, "Is this what they think women are like?" Haha.

You didn't like Ano Hana? Hmm, I suppose I was unimpressed with the characters. I thought the overall experience was kinda cathartic though.

I do try to find the positive things in most series, movies, books, etc. I consume. Otherwise it feels like I wasted my time. Also, the things I outright hate I don't even bother to add to my list as dropped.

I do still like baseball, but I haven't invested much time in learning about teams etc. I liked the Mariners games I went to when I was near Seattle... but apparently they aren't a very good team (no World Series boo). What's your favorite team?
ecstaesthesia Oct 30, 2011 1:44 PM
That's one of my problems, too. It's easy to ignore or even dislike something you don't like the look of. Usually if something's shounen I'll dislike it without watching or reading, which isn't fair to myself or the creator. Some of my favorite series I had as a kid were shounen, and my taste wasn't terrible back then. It's a learning process; I'm trying to overcome all of my prejudices.

Are there any particularly misogynistic slice-of-life comedies? I suppose a lot of them have stock female characters with no growth, which could be taken that way. Maybe I turn a bit of a blind eye to misogyny in anime unless it's blatant. When it comes to other forms of media I'm usually the first to complain. Weird.

I do love the character designs in Yuru Yuri so I like seeing their cute faces on the cover. I melt. Dat Sayuri-hime...

When it comes to Gordon Parks, I wrote an essay on him and his work for a photography class, and that is one of my favorite pictures of his. I do not have a crazy memory for photographers haha.

Oh, and thank you for accepting my friend request. Much appreciated.
ecstaesthesia Oct 29, 2011 11:52 AM
woah that sounds kinda awesome from the synopsis. ahaha he's holding an actual yuri hime on the first volume's cover. i hope someone gets on translating that shit.
ecstaesthesia Oct 27, 2011 3:12 PM
Totally! Is it just me, or has yuri really blossomed these past... five or so years? There were doujin artists and the big names for years, but nowadays there are these, as you said, talented mangaka everywhere. I feel so spoiled!

Speaking of Kurata Uso, it's too bad that Apocalypse was shitcanned. It had potential. And Otsu Hiyori's short stories are so freakin cute aaaah! Have you seen / read Yuru Yuri? I love moeblobs so I'm thinkin I'll like it quite a bit.

That's a great recommendation! I love that so-content-it-hurts smile i get when watching certain things, so I'm looking forward to watching it. I'm going to bump it up my to-be-watched list after I finish Ano Hana (I don't want it to end though ha.).

Goes to show that the userbase of MAL is filled with idiots and young kids. I'm not even that far out of my teens and I feel, well, old on the internet nowadays. But I don't rate, numbers just feel too inorganic to my feelings and thoughts about things. I'm silly though.

Thank you for replying so thoughtfully. :)

Oh! I gather (pun) that you are not being sarcastic at all! Well, let's revel in our shared good taste, my friend.

Is Muteki Kanban Musume that good? I'm willing to give it a shot, just unsure of its quality.

e: also also Gordon Parks was such a good photographer... haha.
ecstaesthesia Oct 26, 2011 11:32 PM
I sure think so! Obviously ahaha. Do you like her or are you bein sarcastic?
yutanpo Apr 2, 2011 11:48 PM
Well it's certainly a good looking anime.
It's kinda weird, it's actually been a while since I've watched a show like this (this kind of pacing, humor, whatever), so I'm kind of not used to it. The definitely definitely felt really long.
It’s time to ditch the text file.
