I am going to preface this by stating that I have never written a review for anything before, let alone an anime. But, I feel this anime deserves it. Please excuse the format I am going to write this review in, because I am just going to put my thoughts done. Thank you.
Sakurasou starts off very mediocre, in my opinion. It establishes its characters somewhat quickly in the beginning, and it was very clear that a few of these characters were going to follow some typical anime cliches. I won't say who or what,
...
but you will understand if/when you watch it.
Being someone who has watched tons of anime (more than I'd probably like to admit, my personal list doesn't cover everything I have seen), I thought knew exactly where the anime was going from the first episode. I thought it was going to be some typical teenage romance anime, and even though those aren't my cup of tea, I trudged through it just because I hate dropping anime and a friend profusely recommended it. So fine. I'll get through it.
But somewhere along the ride, I started to become interested in the show. I don't know when, but I noticed I actually started to like the characters. I noticed that, in each of their own ways, they were charming. And, as sappy as this sounds, I thought I saw a little bit of me in each character. I noticed that this anime somehow sucked me in. I started to feel how the characters felt, as if I'd been in their shoes. Because I have.
But now I wonder if my review/rating of this anime is actually influenced by my past experiences and feelings. I believe the answer is no. While I do seem to feel a personal connection to the anime, I don't feel as if my feelings affect my rating.
I enjoyed this anime.
The story is good.
The art is great.
The soundtrack is good.
The characters, are, however, at times, lackluster. Which is what keeps me from giving them a 9, or a "Great". The MC seems to suffer from a typical illness in anime I like to call "Moronitis". He at times suffers from cliches, and will go on a rant/get angry and take it out on somebody else, but here's what I think makes up for MOST of that. He realizes his mistakes. He (albeit very slowly at times) will admit or notice he's wrong.
So, overall, why did I give this anime a 9. Because, when I think of this anime, I think "great". Because that's what it was for me. I may have also given this a 9 because best girl loses. And towards the end, in a scene between two of the main MC's, something that made me almost think I was watching a KyoAni anime happened.
And with that, I think I have said all I have needed to say. Go try it out.
