have you checked out the Macross film yet?

That's true but there are lot out there that are close to perfect. Have you started watching the old Macross yet, either the movie or the tv series?

I better not say anything then, just watch and you'll know

Basically I praise the show like crazy and I don't find any faults with it (even though there are some)

Evangelion starts to introduce the psychological aspects around episode 16 or so. Be sure to watch the director's cuts of 21-24 instead of the original ones as they clarify more things. Also be sure to watch end of evangelion after the tv 25 and 26 for the real ending. Try checking out the remake films too, they're great. I sent you the links to macross in your msg box. Oh btw I really do consider Evangelion to be one of the best anime ever made and I am REALLY biased towards thinking so(although you might think differently as others do)

Macross Frontier is fairly self contained and does a decent job of explaining the back story to the Macross universe fairly well, so you don't have to watch the original, but I do recommend watching the original Macross first. You'll be able to understand some of the references to the old series,characters, songs and you'll appreciate the ending more. If possible try to watch Macross 7 too(even though it can be a bit unbearable to watch, but the music is great). Lastly if you cannot find the original Macross tv series, the movie is just as good. msg me if you want torrent links to them
