At first Sakurasou and NGNL don't look all that similar, with one being a highschool romance and the other a Trapped-in-another-world story. But if you take a closer look you'll find them to be more similar than most. The first thing any fan of NGNL will notice is the protagonists Sorata and Mashiro share voice actors with Sora and Shiro. Shiro and Mashiro are very similar in characterization, but Sora and Sorata are a bit more different. Ultimately the protagonists of Sakurasou feel like what you'd get if Sora and Shiro never met as children. While the plot isn't too similar thematically the series are almost identical. Both explore how the exceptional fit into and warp the world around them. While Sora of NGNL became the man he was in an attempt to meet Shiro half way, Sakurasou's Mashiro starts his journey over the course of the story, going from a hollow and empty man with no ambitions or goals to a driven and motivated hero, trading the safety of mediocrity for the gamble of exceptionality. Another similarity both series share is their unique visual flair. While NGNL has the more distinctive art style, Sakurasou still has it's own visual identity, a trait few shows can boast. Overall Sakurasou feels like a spiritual prequel to NGNL. If that sounds like something worth checking out I highly encourage you to do so. It should at least tide you over until the movie.
