It is subpar to the manga. It really isn't a surprise, two hours just isn't enough time to capture all the necessary elements of the story. The gaps in the plot cause the movie to be excessively lacking in the development of the characters. Due to this, the viewers that have never read the manga may find there to be little connections to the characters and thus become less sensitive to the dramatic events of this movie.
This movie is provides less enjoyment than the manga; however, it is able to retain some emotional elements. The art is beautiful.

I found myself to be emotionally stirred just by the sight of Nishimiya. The music is well placed to enhance the feelings of the viewers during important scenes, and those scenes that weren't cut is captured perfectly. Even with all the plot holes, I was still moved by the movie. Its ending is very slightly different from the manga, yet it was still dramatic to force some glistening tears to gather around my eyes.
I enjoyed this movie; however, I would definitelky recommend the manga. To fully experience emotions of Koe no Katachi, reading the manga is a must.
