This review contains no spoilers, because then the review would be pointless.
So, it's been a month since I've watched Saiki Kusuo no Ψ-nan (also known as the Disastrous Life of Saiki K.) Since then, I still believe that is probably the best show I have ever watched, and for many reasons. It is hilarious, the voice casting is perfect, each episode is condensed perfectly into eight minute bits, and it has a story that pulls the viewer in.
Assuming you read the synopsis, onto the review we go!
STORY
Rated: 9/10
The story, which some would argue is the most important part of the show, is great. However,
...
this isn't only due to the main character, or the way the episodes are structured. No, I give the credit to the supporting characters, who all have different personalities and goals. Take, for example, Nendou Riki. Nendou is, simply put, an idiot. So much of an idiot that Saiki can't use simple telepathy to see what Nendou is thinking. However, this only propels the story forward, as the most unexpected things can come this doofus that the audience soon grows to love. We'll go more in depth in the Character section, but the blend of supporting characters and the main character is simply put, amazing.
As I mentioned above, each episode is around eight to ten minutes long. If you watched this series on Netflix, like I did, then you'll see that four episodes are squeezed into one single episode, which surprisingly works. These episodes, who manage to put a background, story, and solution in only eight minutes, are a piece of art. A conflict can usually be resolved in eight minutes, but each episode helps develop a character more, whether it be developing a new power of Saiki's, or adding a new motivation or reason to befriend/annoy Saiki.
Lastly, the comedic presence and timing of this show is great. It makes sure not to overflow us with jokes, but each joke usually hits at home with the audience. There are several instances which I can pull up but won't due to spoilers, but the writing isn't only it. The art style of this anime, which is soft and goes smoothly with mostly any background, can also add to the comedy of this show.
However, there are some negatives to the story. Mainly, the lack of a continuous story can be annoying at times, as well as forgetting what happened in previous episodes due to the shortness of them. However, the positives vastly outnumber the negatives, and make the story very, very enjoyable.
Whew. Sorry about the long Story section, but it's probably the most important part of a show, so I had to include as much as I could.
ART
Rated 7/10
The art of the show isn't anything amazing. There are no action packed fight scenes which involve Saiki fighting an alien or anything like that. As I mentioned above, the art is very soft, and the only time we see bold lines is when Saiki is getting serious. However, the background art is very pretty, whether it be the beach, Saiki's house, or the high school. The art for this show gets the bare minimum done, and it honestly doesn't need anything else. While the art can be lacking, for this type of comedic show, it can work perfectly.
SOUND
Rated 10/10
God, I love the sounds that this show makes. Each character, save for Saiki, has a mini theme that goes along perfectly with their character. I'll give the example of Kaidou Shun. Kaidou Shun is another "friend" of Saiki's, who has a hero complex. Whenever he goes into his alter ego, a member of a secret society where all the members have powers, mysterious music plays, usually stereotyped as something dark and interesting is about to happen. However, what usually happens next is Kaidou embarrassing himself. The audio helps majorly the comedic timing of the show.
Also, the intro and outro songs of the show is effin amazing and I love all of them to bits.
CHARACTER
Rated 10/10
Holy hell. The characters in this anime are, simply put, amazing. I'll put a list of them and some characteristics, and then describe them a bit more.
Kusuo Saiki- The protagonists of this anime. He has psychic powers, and is pretty damn powerful. He also just wants to be left alone by his friends and family.
Shun Kaidou- A companion of Saiki, who thinks that he is a hero called Jet Black Wings, where he has to stop the evil organization Dark Reunion. In reality, he's a dorky kid with an overbearing mother and too much time on his hands.
Nendou Riki-Another companion of Saiki's, he is an idiot who's mind can't be read. Literally. He enjoys ramen and hanging out with Saiki. Later into the anime, he is considered a "rival" by Kineshi Hairo, although Nendou isn't aware of this. His father died when he was a child, and his father's ghost haunts Saiki from time to time.
Kineshi Hairo- The jock of the group, he loves motivating his classmates and playing sports. He doesn't back down to any challenge, and isn't afraid to strip down to his underwear to represent his school. Can be overenthusiastic at times.
Kokomi Teruhashi- Literally every man's love interest, she is a high schooler who just wants to get Saiki to say "Wow!" at her good looks. Is friends with Chiyo Yumehara. Her brother has a crush on her. Her father probably does as well.
That's really the main group. They all have such great dynamic together that it's honestly pretty amazing that the anime managed to pull it off. There are other smaller characters, such as Saiki's parents, but that group is probably the best part of the anime.
ENJOYMENT
Rated 10/10
Just watch the damn show. It's so good. I throughly enjoyed it, and am surprised that it isn't more popular. There is only a sub out right now, but even if you don't like subs, you'll enjoy this one. Watch. The. Show.
ENDING REMARKS
The Disastrous Life of Saiki K will forever hold a special place in my heart as one of the first animes that made me burst out laughing and always made me happy. If I was offered to watch it again, I would 100% take that opportunity. So, Overall, I give it a 10/10, and can't WAIT to watch the second season.
