This is my first review so it would not surprise me if it does not sound legitimate, not to mention I am not a native English speaker so my writing will be pretty basic. Please bear with it. And, there may be some spoilers, so read it carefully.
Shigatsu Wa Kimi No Uso, or Your Lie in April, is one of these animes that have undeniable qualities, like its animation or beautiful soundtrack. But to me, what made this anime great was how much it can make you feel sympathy for people's wrongdoings, or at least, make you understand that things are not so much as
...
they seem at first sight.
Arima Kousei, the main character of this anime, is to me someone you are absolutely not likely to encounter in real life (miracles can still happen though). Why is it so? Basically, he is the one who suffers the most from others' mistakes but who can also go through all this wonderfully.
If I had to put it in a clearer way, one word can sum up pretty well Shigatsu: selfishness. The story is mainly about Kousei suffering from others' selfishness. At first sight, it may seem bad and unfair for him, but what I find incredibly beautiful and sad at the same time is, as I said, how the anime tries not to make you hateful for what people have "done" to Arima. Sometimes it looks obvious, some other not so much. Without giving too much detail, the relationship between Arima and his mother is an obvious example, and the one between Arima and Kaori is not.
In fact, I think that one of the most important anime's message is that judging someone from what he has done and only that would be the wrong thing to do. Shigatsu does not really tell you that this guy is bad, this one is not. Not at all actually. Even though having one's own reasons doesn't necessarily justify one's actions, people have to understand first why something is done before even saying whether it is good or bad, and the anime spends much time giving enough background about the main characters. And, in my opinion, Arima has countless reasons to resent his friends or mother for what they have put him through, but for some reason, which you will comprehend eventually, he does not. But still, that is why he seems a bit unreal, though that does not really matter.
In the end, Shigatsu shows you through the characters that mistakes are part of life and that feeling pain is something necessary to grow up and overcome its hardships. This idea is explicitly mentioned in the anime. Though I don't have the exact words, here is what it says (more or less): Some people have to take the demon's path in order to be able to grow up. In other words, loss (you will know what I refer to if you watch the anime, which I hope you do) would be the solution to one's problems.
Life can be both tender and bitter, but we can't live a truly meaningful life if we do not take what it is as a whole. Good memories are here to remind you that everything was not so sad, and the bad ones that it also helped having good ones.
May be too much, may be too cheesy, but let us be honest, this is youth. What would you expect them to be?
Overall note: 9. Thanks for reading and I hope you found it useful.
