Hellsing Ultimate is a rare beast for me: I love it in the English dub, and it's about 1000 times better than the original (which is starting to become common in modern reboots of older anime).
The voices are the best part, and what really made Hellsing Ultimate for me. Seras and Hellsing's British accents, the German antagonist and his ridiculous accent, it's all just so Tarantino-esque to me, and that's a good, no, great thing.
If you don't know the basic premise of the show based on the title it's (spoiler alert) about vampires. Specifically it's about Dra... I mean, Alucard (why doesn't
...
he just call himself Vlad by the way?) and his "apprentice" the young and large chested former British police officer Seras.
It's got a lot of the same Vampire story tropes you've heard a dozen times: A main character who's a "young" vampire that's reluctant to kill people to feed herself, an insanely powerful and ancient vampire, Vampire hunters, etc.
If you've seen the older show from the 90's, you know some of the story already. I like that Hellsing Ultimate explained why Seras became a vampire, and none of her comrades in the police did: She was a virgin (how that happens with a body that exaggerated and an adorable English accent I have no idea). You'll also notice that, as an OVA series, Hellsing Ultimate will cover 2 seasons of the old series in 2 episodes.
all the story elements are still there, including the incredible foul mouthed vampire from season 1.
The story does start to get a little weird near the end, at least for me, otherwise I'd have rated it at 10. I won't spoil anything but I'll just say it starts to drag a little in the last two episodes and the end of the final battle elicited an "oh, come on!" from me.
Still a great series and definitely worth a watch. 10 episodes at around 50 minutes each, so it's pretty short, but they pack a lot of action, story, British accents, boobs, and of course lots of violence and gore into that 10 hours, so I'd recommend not watching it all in one day if you want to take bathroom breaks.

Yu Yu Hakusho is probably my favorite "Spirit Detective" type series. I'd inlcude Bleach, Angel Beats, Shikabane Hime, and several others in the same category, and I'd call Yu Yu Hakusho my favorite so far. If you're a fan of action series, but don't like the over the top super powers that come with shows like Dragonball Z or the like, this show is for you.
One thing that stands out about Yu Yu Hakusho for me is that it's one of the few series that I 100% prefer to watch in English. Usually I'll insist on a Japanese dub with subtitles, but
...
this show is different for some reason.
Yu Yu HAkusho is an oldschool, 80's-90's anime from what some would call the golden years of anime in America. It's about a bunch of teenagers with super powers because of some supernatural event (you've probably heard this story in a thousand other synopses of a thousand different shows). What I personally like most about this series is the lovable cast (particularly Boton and her random English accent, part of why I like the English dub, and Hiei, the badass with a heart of gold). These characters were far from original (personality-wise) even when the show was new, but I particularly enjoyed Yu Yu Hakusho's rendition of them
Again, this series is from the late 80s/early 90s, so the visuals and sound aren't as great as modern anime, but for the time they were pretty good. The special effects are what to watch the show for. Cool energy blasts, beam swords, 'splosions, and lots of action. What sets Yu Yu apart from, say, Dragonball Z, is that the cast are constantly underdogs whenever fighting is involved. I've always been a fan of the "comeback kid" trope in action shows and this anime delivers that, arc after arc.
Overall a good series if you're up for watching a older show from a time before Soul Society and Konoha that's good in English or Japanese.

"Are you Ready for a roller coaster ride of pure terror!?" ~Nergal, The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy.
Corpse Party: Tortured Souls is probably the most twisted anime I've ever seen. It disturbed me more than some of the freakier hentai I've seen even, which isn't much, granted, but it was enough to scar me for life, and that should really say something about Corpse Party.
If you're a fan of Game of Thrones, Saw, and Horror in general, you will love this series, and you'll hate yourself for watching it afterwards. Without giving too much story away, let's just say that no one
...
is safe, NO ONE, and you will see a lot of highly detailed gore, murder, blood and in general supernatural shenanigans.
Quick breakdown of the anime in general:
Story:
The story is about a group of friends that are about to be split up by one of them going to a different school, so they preform a charm that will keep them together which involves tearing apart a paper doll and keeping the pieces. After performing the charm, though, they're plunged into a hellish older version of their school populated mostly by the ghosts of children and a serial killer who killed them. The story is very hard to predict and manages to send a lot of twists your way in just 4 episodes. The show also has a Game of Thrones style attitude toward killing off its characters, so don't pick any favorites unless you want to get your heart broken.
Art:
The art in Corpse Party is actually pretty amazing. A horror series like this needs to create a certain type of ambiance, and Corpse Party pulls off the dark, hellish atmosphere of the ghost school quite magnificently. I should also point out that the gore, though very unpleasant to look at, is also rendered in a much higher detail than I usually see, and other effects, such as the creeping darkness, or the ubiquitous bloodstains, are very well done and all come together to create an excellent sinister atmosphere.
Sound isn't my forte so I won't rate it (though I may in other series if it's particularly bad)
Enjoyment:
Wow, I don't know if "enjoy" is the right word for this series. Does anyone enjoy a Dali painting? No. Can someone appreciate the artistic skill and creativity that went into it? Yes, yes they can. I mean, obviously if I'm giving the series high ratings, I must have enjoyed it, right? Even a few months after I saw it I'm still not sure if I actually LIKED it, but it did leave an impact on me, and it's definitely a well made series.
Overall:
If you like animes with adorable little girls, terrifying little girls, tons of gore, and just horror in general, then you will "like" Corpse Party.
