I’ve never bothered to write a review before but I just feel the need to do that now. Maybe it’s because of all the other negative reviews I just read about the show that somehow made me want to say something good about it idk lol
Sure, Akame ga Kill wasn’t something super unique plot-wise or heck overall I guess but I don’t think that’s how you should be viewing it in the first place, when you start watching it. That’s a shonen what do you people expect lol? Jojo for example is an absolute train wreck plot-wise, people die, they come back, some characters are
...
dumb as heck but we all love Jojo, right? That’s because we all know what we are watching and we’re not expecting it to be a psychological masterpiece of some sort….
That aside, I really liked Akame ga Kill, even when I was also firstly viewing it as
something that’s supposed to be ‘somehow unique’ or ‘not your typical shonen anime’. Once I understood that it was just an action with some decent very anime anime humour I really enjoyed it.
The plot wasn’t special or original, but it didn’t bother me. The ‘Corrupt Government-trope’ is something used and overused and it is a problem that we face irl, so why not use it even again. :D
Honestly, I can’t argue with the main issue most people (obviously) have with the plot. One of the weaknesses of the show really was the fact that we- the viewer- just didn’t feel this emotional attachment to all of the characters, because they were just plain or died too quickly. (Although I think that it was pretty cool that they actually died and were NOT revived- kudos to that I guess + I was surprised that Akame was the climax of the show and not Tatsumi as he was the main character.)
However, most of the characters- both the main bad- and the good guys we’re pretty likable. And those who were not, were just unimportant. (I’m addressing all the people who said that ‘most antagonists weren’t interesting because they were absolutely retarded or their only characteristic was to be evil’) Yes, true. But were they key to the plot? - Not really… They were only important for their job to kill one of Tatsumi’s comrades, so that he can ‘learn’ something from it. (For example right before the end of the final battle Tatsumi remembers something one of his friends said before he died and that let’s say -had an effect on the battle)
+ I really loved how every one of ‘our people’ had something (for the lack of words) quirky about them.
Seryu or whatever the dog-monster-machine-gun-girl’s name was, was a different breed, we don’t talk about her twisted Majesty.
One other issue I want to discuss is the humour. I don’t think the jokes we’re inadequately placed. On the contrary- as some other people said, lighthearted jokes and humour was the way of survival for the assassins after the loss, and I think that’s how we are supposed to cope with the death of the characters as well.
Animation was decent to really good. The soundtrack was also good in my opinion- it did its job. I absolutely loved both OPs and EDs (2nd OP and ED were better I’d say).
In conclusion, (and I’m by no means an expert in anime-watching lol) if I had to compare this anime to something, I would say watch it as you would read a chick-lit (light reading).
It was enjoyable (7-8/10). Not a masterpiece but definitely NOT that bad as people say it is. I cried a little :,)
(I have not read the manga.)
[It’s getting really late where I am and I’m about to pass out. This review probably has a lot of nonsense in it, I’m sorry :D Despite that thing I hope that it was helpful or at least READABLE :D]
