A heart-warming slice of life with spot-on comedy and action.
The show starts off by introducing a world-renowned "Cold-War" spy tasked with his most difficult task yet, saving the world by having a fake family, Mission Impossible-style. Loid "Twilight" Forger is presented as a stoic man who can easily and solely defeat an army of armed henchman and abrasively break hearts without batting an eye. However, for a man who lives in a twilight world, there are definitely friends - even better a family - at dusk, for Loid.
It is made clear early on that the mission is more of an overarching narrative and it's
...
focus is laid on a man who is trying to become a better father and a loving husband. Throughout the show we find: heart-warming moments of Loid and his adopted daughter, Anya, celebrating their victories together; her new mother, Yor, being clumsy in adapting to the family life and normal conversation, while still trying the become a good mother for Anya; and the absurd, while comical reactions of Anya, while secretly reading everyone's mind, very seriously playing her part of the spy lifestyle but, ultimately, making her dad, like all new dads, quite confused and exhausted.
All these moments together are what makes the show fun to watch, a father-daughter bond, great comedy timing and greatly choreographed action scenes. Did we even expect anything else coming from WIT and CloverWorks...
But I need to make an important addition here, (for some) this show isn't the best ever or a masterpiece, it's just very good at the elements discussed previously, thus making it very enjoyable if you're a fan of these elements.
The story is not really special, but it's pacing is good enough to keep it interesting and fresh. (7/10)
The art is a bit bland, but it creates this old spy feeling by using a mix of Cold-War Eastern-Berlin type of architecture, which has a charm to it. (8/10)
The sound is good and works alright with both the comedic and fast-paced action scenes, but not memorable per se (7/10)
The three main characters are fun and interesting throughout the story, and create this element of warmth by growing as a family. As a viewer you are drawn in by the hopes that the family succeeds, which makes the story more enjoyable. The remaining characters are a bit bland and underdeveloped. (7/10)
So what now?
On the one hand, if you're looking for a heart-warming slice of life show with some spot-on comedy and action, which has overall good pacing and stays refreshing, then this is a show for you.
On the other, if you're looking for a show with expansive world building, underlying/ hidden themes or a walkthrough of deep character development, then this is not it.
Personally, I enjoyed spy x family thoroughly and it definitely scored a 9/10 for enjoyment.
However, comparing what it does offer to what it doesn't, I would grade it an 8/10 (38/50) overall.
