Hokuto no Ken (Manga) add

I loved this manga from chapter 1 to chapter 245. This is among my favorite mangas if not my favorite manga. Fist of the North Star is an emotional and badass journey about Kenshiro, his friends, rivals and love interests. From the beginning you are in for a ride and it does not disappoint.

However, as much as I love this manga there are three criticisms that I just have to address.

Every companion not named Bat, Lin, and Mamiya just dies. Rei's death was touching and a fitting way to end his character. But after that every new companion's storyline becomes painfully obvious. Kenshiro meets a character, the character tries to hurt him but doesn't actually want to kill him. Kenshiro doesn't kill him, the character becomes a key companion during the arc, and the character dies at a fitting time. With a couple of variations, this happens a lot. It doesn't mean that these characters aren't good, but its so cut and dry that I knew what was going to happen to Ein the second I saw him. The only companions (outside the 3 that I said before) that this doesn't happen to is Ryu, Toki, and maybe someone else I am missing. The sadness of Kenshiro's losses is what helps him be so strong but its so copy and paste that it irks me.

The "there can be one successor but the parent/someone does not want to kill the child/children so it becomes a conflict later on" cliche is used more than enough in this manga. I don't have too much to say about this except it's just annoying that it's used more than once.

A lot of the Hokuto abilities are insane, but some are just used once and just for convenience. Most pressure points are explained and balanced and there even is the weird arc where Amiba pretends to be Toki and thinks he understands how to accurately and correctly press points and create his own point techniques, which backfires and explodes his hands. But some of the points just are there to progress the plot. Oh Bat is dead? Well Kenshiro pressed some points and now he is alive again. Airi poured poison in her eyes to blind herself but Kenshiro is able to cure it with pressure points. Maybe I missed something but this is just "well Kenshiro and Hokuto Shinken are that powerful" to the point where if he wants to do something, Kenshiro will just do it.

These are just my criticisms as my praises of the series would be 10 times the length of this review. I do not regret reading this in the slightest and despite my criticisms I have been recommending this to anyone that will listen.

Mixed Feelings

This manga yo-yos in quality throughout the entire 93 chapters. I really enjoyed the first 20-30ish chapters, then the same repetitive shit happens again and again. It becomes pretty good for the final ten chapters, but then there is the 3 "Oh this is 2 years in the future" chapters that add nothing to the story. I would have a better opinion of the series if they did not have them.

The romance "plot" of this manga is drawn out and comes to a crawl for half the manga, and most chapters turn to be about Mayumi being annoyed that she's single.

Ijousha no Ai (Manga) add

I have a little bit to say. I was able to read 60 something chapters and then the ending (Because this is all I could find/is around). This manga is not a very enjoyable read. The only reason I finished it is because this manga makes you want to know what happens. The art is less than average, the characters are less than average, and the story is decent. The ending is pretty good and wraps it all up.

I regret reading this manga and I recommend avoiding it if you are thinking about reading it. There is so much ... gore, torture, and murder that just makes it horrible. The fucked up things stop for a couple chapters then come back. It's not worth it if you except anything happy to happen.

The MC is a weak ass bastard. The one thing that is clear throughout the story is that the FMC would be easy to kill. Of course the goal of the MC is to kill the FMC because of what she has done to the people around him. But he only tries like twice(?). Mark Wahlberg has said that if he was on one of the planes that struck the World Trade Center during the September 11th attacks that, “There would have been a lot of blood in that first-class cabin and then me saying, ‘OK, we’re going to land somewhere safely, don’t worry.’” I don't want to say that it would've been different if I was there but there is a lot of times that she could've been killed and nothing happened.

The ending is pretty good? It's a "Ten Years Later..." ending but I think it wrapped up that pile of shit with a bow. It has been a couple days since I finished it, and at first I disregarded the ending because the fucked up parts of the series left me feeling awful. But I did enjoy the ending after I thought about it.

This series made me feel like shit and there are very few reasons to read this. The only reason I am even reviewing this is to give my opinion to anyone that might want to read this, and the only reason I am able to write a decent amount is because I gave this a couple days to forget about the torture and gore and fucked up things in this manga.

The manga is very clear on how it is going to be. If you like gore and psychological and tragedy, you might enjoy this more than me. Even with that said, the story is alright. Most of the chapters is just torture/gore and backstory. You get what you sign up for, so even though I feel the characters are weak, the enjoyment for me was very little, and the art is very lacking, I'd say a fan of the genre may enjoy some parts.

That's why I give this a 4 but I recommend most people to stay away.
