Sword Art Online.
I actually found this by pure chance when searching for another light novel. I have to say that I'm quite happy I happened across it, because it's a highly entertaining story. I decided to write this review in the hope that more people will enjoy it also, so that tells you my opinion right away.
The basic premise is simple, and its one that many of us are familiar with. A boy logs into a virtual reality video game only to find that hes stuck in the game, unable to log out. What makes this story unique is the way
...
in which the story is told. In this world, there are no resets, and dieing is final.
The story deals very much with the concept of death, as well as human interaction. While I'm not sure it could be billed as a psychological novel, it certainly comes close. The main character has an interesting outlook on life, and since the story is told from his point of view, we get to see alot of his thought processes.
Other than the main character, the rest of the cast is pretty solid We have a few cookie cutter characters (like a typical tsundere heroine, for instance), but they all fit well into their roles and none of them come across as particularly annoying.
Another thing that many of you may find interesting is the game world itself. Reki Kawahara is either a hardcore gamer himself, or he did plenty of research. The game world he's created is interesting to learn about, and makes me wish that such a game existed. It most certainly isn't like anything on the market today, and it isn't a WoW clone either like so many other MMORPG series.
Being a light novel, there isn't a ton of art, but the pieces we do see are quite good and pleasing to the eye.
All in all, definitely worth a read if you're a psych fan, a fan of MMORPGs, or just a fan of good novels. Not a masterpiece, but still worth the read.
