Shinsekai Yori is an excellent dystopian anime held slightly held back by its pacing. The concept is that sometime in the 21st century certain humans developed intense telekinetic powers, called Cantus, which allowed them to control ANY form of matter. Some of these humans lost their mind due to the powers and began mass murdering entire populations, making it so almost all non-Cantus-wielding humans were elimintated. The plot of this anime concerns the society that develops around these super-powered telekinetic humans.
I felt it necessary to include this description of the plot because this anime revolves HEAVILY around world-building, and it is done excellently. The

anime follows 5 children learning about, and being indoctrinated by their society. This serves as a tool for the writers to show how their society has been built up around the Cantus users and the logic and successes and failures of said society. The characters are central to this world building, and there are a few episodes where that are pretty much just characters talking about the world around them and doing nothing. This leads to the main and only real weakness of the anime, the pacing.
Despite having a very strong world, and an interesting story to tell within this world, the series just moves too slowly. Characters often reiterate things we already know about the world and the anime is filled with a lot of silence and slow moving scenes. I think this is partially done because the characters are trying to understand the world themselves, as they are mostly children, however it makes the anime somewhat boring at times and I felt like I had to force myself through parts of it just to get to that juicy world-building. This is definitely NOT a shonen despite being a kind of coming of age story about 5 kids with superpowers. It is very somber and serious and devoid of much action or happiness. Personally I dropped the anime twice, just because I wanted something more engaging but kept coming back because the characters and the world are so well made.
A note on art and sound: The art and sound are very cohesive throughout the anime. The art style is semi-realistic, and uses a lot of greys, browns, and dark greens. This gives the world a very muddled and somber feel to it. The sound is excellent, I found myself remembering most of the background music and the credit theme is 10/10 even though it doesn't fit with the rest of the anime very well.
Overall I would still recommend this anime to most people but totally understand if most of them didn't like it. You have to get into the world in order for some of the slower episodes to be worth it, but damn is the world interesting. Maybe I am just being a bit picky about the pacing, and if you don't mind slower animes that much then you will definitely enjoy this one.
