Ok, I read a good chunk of the reviews, and I saw either absolute adoration, or blatant hatred. The trend I noticed is that everyone who just flat out despised it, generally seemed to watch only action based anime. Yeah yeah there are exceptions to the rule. (Note the world generally) I watch them too. I still follow Bleach and Naruto, and i've watched FMA and FMA Brotherhood like 3 times over. However I still enjoy the occasional rom-com and straight out romance.
Story 9/10:
The story necessarily follows most rom-com archetype's. Guy and girl meet through a small little event and eventually become friends. The
...
story itself is a tear jerker, and hilarious. I find my self surfing youtube randomly, and decide to look up clips of different parts just because I find them exceedingly funny. It's pretty slapstick, with Sunohara getting mauled by nearly every girl. I myself am pretty, "tough". Not easy to cry, and things usually don't tug at my heart strings when i watch them. Clannad managed to do it. And it's not just me. I've shown a few episodes to some of my friends, and they immediately went out and watched it, and admitted they we're in tears. That just shows how good this anime really can be if you invest yourself in the characters and really get to know them.
Art 9/10:
I gave the art and 9 purely for the fact that I dislike the eye sizes. THEY'RE HUGE! I get it's the genre, like Kanon, but it kind of bothered me. Otherwise I would have given it a 10. The occasional fight scene is well done, and the general background is incredible. You don't ignore what's in the background like you normally would. It's almost like looking around a real world. You want to see everything there is and almost get to know your way around the school. The characters (aside from the eyes) are drawn proportionally. No giant chest areas, or disgustingly hot girls jumping out from everywhere. They move well, and they don't make random cartoonish faces. (except sunohara..)
Sound 10/10:
Oh my god....my friends found out about me and a friend of mine watching this, looked up some of the music from different sad scenes, and started playing it. It made us tear up! T_T The music is always perfect. It's so hard to explain, since all i play is the guitar, but it's like the old movies, when certain music plays, you know what kind of thing is going to happen. And the OP and ED are great. The OP isn't my favorite, but Dango Daikazoku is most assuredly on my iPod =D. The subbing was done, incredibly. The seiyuu's who voiced each character we're impeccable. The dubbed version was not as good, but not unworthy of watching if you aren't into subs. However they did change things around a bit, by changing some of the things the characters say. For example when Nagisa sings Dango Daikazoku, she sings in english, which makes her say "big dango family", and doesn't sound right. She kinda has to rush the family to make it fit.
Character 8/10:
This, is the only part of the bad reviews I agree with somewhat. Most of the characters have some sort of terrible problem that Tomoya and Nagisa fix. However, contrary to belief, the characters don't really "fade out" from the story. If you think about they way things are placed, they're still involved, but since the sort of has character arc's (almost like Bakemonogatari) they can't focus on all the characters at the same time. If every character we're to have an integral part of every episode, things would just get entirely too confusing. Each character has his or her own defining part of the story, and then becomes part of the "gang". Tomoya and Nagisa's story are definitely the shining part of this entire show. This isn't the normal high school lovey dovey embarrassing romance that you see in every...single...highschool...romance....anime...It's much more mature, concentrating on the feelings of the two, and not on the lust incorporated with a normal highschool romance. And although the characters have incredibly convenient backstories, they way they're resolved is definitely worth applauding. The less seen character's are not incredibly orignal. You've got the shy one, the tsundere, the strong girl who wants to be nice, the smart one who doesn't talk much, the loli, and so on. If this bothers you, I highly recommend watching Clannad After Story, which tones down the humor, and gives a more romantic, and serious tone. I don't want to give any spoilers, but if you like Kanon, the second season is definitely something you'd enjoy.
One issue. People keep saying this is filled with Moe attributes. I really don't see it. Fuko maybe, but where else? You can't say it's totally loaded with moe if there are a few cutesy moments. Message me or something and tell me what parts i'm missing. Maybe my definition of moe is messed up =D
****SPOILER****
Also, if the fact that Tomoya's relationship with his father isn't delved into in the first season irks you, then that's one more reason to watch the second. They get much deeper into his relationship and explain alot of what happend.
Enjoyment 10/10:
I sometimes watch anime over again. I've seen Code Geass 1 & 2, 3 times, FMA 3 times, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann twice, but if i'm accurate, I've rewatched Clannad about 7 times. If you enjoy a good comedy, that likes to slide in drama, and incorporates a good amount of romance, this is an anime that will definitely take you on a wonderful journey.
Overall 10/10:
I gave Clannad a 10 because really, in the end, enjoyment is what matters. I HATE the animation style of GTO, (yeah it was pretty old, but i still don't like it) yet i've watched all 43 episodes 2 times. Why? Because of how much I enjoyed it. They story is heart wrenching, it's one of the few "harem" anime's that isn't filled with busty girls and loaded with terrible highschool drama that is just oozing out of your screen. THis is definitely a more adult anime, even though it's set in a highschool.
