Now, when I heard of Amnesia, I was excited. So, so, SO mind blowing-ly excited. My first thoughts? 'LOOK AT THAT ART UGH NOW I HAVE TO WATCH THIS.'
I still contemplate whether that was a good idea or not. Now I don't mean to just ramble on about the negative parts of this anime, because really, it does have it's redeeming qualities, but there simply wasn't enough there for me to give it more than a 5.
Story: 3/10
Of course since this is based off a visual novel, an otome game to be specific, I wasn't expecting anything perfect. I love reverse harem as much
...
as the next girl/guy, but animes like Uta No Prince-Sama taught me not to expect anything much in story, just a lot in art. The reason I'm giving this a 3 is because, well... I quite like stories that give me bits as I go on, so I stay interested. So I want to know what happens next, so I can keep forming the puzzle in my head, steadily, even if it's creating the wrong picture. This anime? I suggest you watch it if you like to be confused for practically the whole anime. Everything is pretty much revealed in the last two episodes, so sometimes I feel like I could have just watched the first episode, then the last two. To be honest for half the anime I was convinced that every time the Heroine died she revived with a new boyfriend but er... That wouldn't be the best plot, would it?
Despite this being a reverse harem, which of course means, awh yeah, romance, it actually didn't hold that much in the romance field. Yes, there were the basics of like, kissing, and etc, but it made me feel near nothing as it felt like I was just watching strangers kiss. I felt no attachment to them, half the time. The ending was not satisfying to me in the least, and left me with a mostly bitter taste in my mouth, honestly. But I can't tell you I wasn't interested in the least, of course. Sure, this story wasn't completely immersing, but it wasn't completely terrible. I managed to finish it after all, due to that little bit of curiosity in me. That curiosity was never sated, but er, I'll give them credit for trying.

Art: 9/10
This had to be the absolute best quality of this anime, actually. I could forgive it's plot sometimes just because of it, after all. The colors chosen were lovely, and the style was just so crisp and pretty. This is what pulled me to watch the anime in the first place, just how beautiful the art was. The eyes have to be my favorite part though. LOOK AT THEM. They're absolutely stunning! I know some might definitely beg to differ, as they might make you think there's something special about their super amazing eyeballs, (which there really isn't, they're just nice to look at.) All those pretty close ups gave me more time to admire them soooo... Yeah. The art definitely pleased me.
The only qualm I have is the outfits. WHAT. No, seriously, WHAT?! I can't believe no one on the streets gave those guys weird looks. Sure, your steampunk/gothic clothes are pretty sexy, but what?! Everyone is wearing normal clothing, even the Heroine is wearing fairly normal clothes... But these guys? Man, are they fashionistas trying to give out a message. Perhaps the reason no one questions their sense in fashion is because everybody is completely used to it? I don't know. You tell me.

Sound: 7/10
Okay, so I was a bit iffy on the sound. I don't have much to say on the voice acting, I quite liked all their voices. They suited them quite well, so no qualms on that. I have to say, I fell in love with that little music box track. It's a sweet little thing, it makes me think of a curious child, or something like that. It suited the anime in that aspect, I suppose. The opening and the ending definitely were memorable for me though, as I really liked them. (especially the ED with that whispering and intense background) The only problem for me though is that I felt as catchy and amazingly awesome both songs were, Zoetrope and Recall did not suit this anime. It made seem way more action packed and tantalizingly laced with mystery than it actually was. Sure there was action, kinda, (though most of it was near the end), but it seemed a bit too crazy for such an anime. The OP was a little better but still... Dat Jrock. (Is it Jrock? I don't know.)

Character: 3/10
My biggest problem with this anime might've been the Heroine. Why am I putting an uppercase for Heroine, you may ask? Well, other than that, she has no name. I guess since this is off an otome game, (I'm assuming it's the type that lets you change her name), they decided NOT to name her. That definitely was a new one to me, but not necessarily a good thing. It didn't bother me too much that she didn't have a name, as none of the guys ever needed to use it apparently, but it definitely made her feel way less like a plausible character. But never mind that, she never really felt much like a plausible character in the first place.
This was pretty much the Watch Boys Hold A Conversation With Themselves anime. Yes, she spoke, (thank heavens), but usually every person who talked to the Heroine, minus Orion was pretty much talking to themselves. I was actually surprised in the last two episodes, with how much speaking she did. When people talked to her, especially the boys, her main reactions would often be a tiny gasp, little noises or just plain staring, as if she has no clue what's happening. Which is true for the most part half the time, but really? I just could not sympathize with her, and by the end of it she just made me want to sigh and hold my face in my hands. Most characters had little to none in backstories, and character development was pretty much watching them flirt with the Heroine. Wow, so much development. They're not completely terrible though, at least they speak.
My favorite character definitely had to be Toma, really. Ukyo pulls in a close second, though. Why, you may ask? Because there was character development to speak of, yay! They had to be some of the only characters I didn't actually feel nothing towards, because as lovely as Shin's face is, and as much as I wanted to make him my favorite, I couldn't. Though Toma didn't choose the appropriate methods of expressing his love, at least he had reasons. Sorta kinda lika.

Enjoyment: 4/10
I can't say much for this. There were times when I mildly enjoyed it, but there were never really 'WOW I NEED TO REWIND THAT' moments. I definitely watched episode nine with happiness due to the fact that... Er, well spoilers. Just... plot was happening, and I liked it. Or well, side-ark. Whatever. Something. (Still need to work on my review language)

Overall -
Story + Art + Sound + Character + Enjoyment x 2
3 + 9 + 7 + 3 + 4 x 2 = 52
52/100 = 5.2/10
Overall score: 5
My advice, watch Amnesia if you just want to be immersed in pretty boys. To fully enjoy this, er... Perhaps don't ask too many questions until near the end, it will save you a lot of headaches because you probably won't get those answer anytime soon. I feel bad, because I know this review might be really on the negative side, and this anime isn't completely unwatchable... But, good luck to those of you who wish to watch it.

"Bungaku Shoujo" Movie
(Anime)
add
When I found Bungaku Shoujo, or rather Literature Girl, I was expecting something completely different. Reading the synopsis really surprised me, and it wasn't anything I'd ever seen in an anime. Someone who ate books. Well, er, that's interesting, was my first thought.
Now I have far too many things to say about this anime, but I can't tell you that I was disappointed. The storyline was quite good at pulling at the heartstrings; though I do admit some actions taken I could not sympathize completely with, I still did enjoy this movie a lot. I do highly recommend you watch Bungaku Shoujo: Memoir first ... |
