This anime gives a perfect example of what would happen realistically in this situation, instead of it ending in the way you want it to. A basic rundown of this anime's plot is that two childhood friends are in love, but see each other less and less due to having to move to different and farther places in Japan. They end up going out, but know eventually that their relationship must come to an end due to distance and how the amount of times they constant each other become less and less.
Story-
Yes yes, I know that plot may not seem very interesting at first and
...
even a bit stereotypical, but the way they put the plot together in the actual anime is pretty well thought to say the least. You can actually see the situation in the anime happening to you or someone you know, and the anime ends like it would in real life, which is one of the reasons I'm giving the anime an 8/10 story wise. Instead of giving the fans what they want and ending the anime on a happy note, they end it in a way that gives you a dreaded sense of melancholy but happiness at the same time. It leaves you wishing it could've ended the way you wanted to, but thinking the ending wouldn't be as satisfying if it did.
Art-
For people who've seen this anime already, they know exactly why I'm giving the art a perfect ten. While the character design seems a bit plain, the art is just amazing! It gave me an eyegasm. The water swimmers and sparkles, and the clouds in the sky are a mix of blues, pinks, and other colors that tie everything together perfectly. This anime was pleasing to the eye and honestly, I'd rewatch it just to experience the visuals again.
Sound-
The soundtrack wasn't perfect, but it wasn't bad either. The music played in certain scenes suited them perfectly and didn't sound all too bad, so I'm giving it a six.
Character-
The personality and demeanor of the the characters wasn't exactly something I liked, but it was so fitting for the anime's plot that I have to give it a seven. The characters personalities and such contributed to keeping the calm setting the anime had to offer and didnt ruin anything. I don't think you could've used a Yandere serial killer as the main character and still keep the calm setting-actually-I don't think any other type of character would be able to.
Overall, 5 Centimeters per Second was a very good anime. I don't think there was anything about it I particularly disliked. I highly recommend it if you're in for an Anime that has a few feels, but isn't a big tear jerker and will leave you content until you watch your next anime.
