B Gata H Kei is a romantic/school/comedy that on the surface seems like a typical seinen-esque ecchi-filled anime, but B Gata H Kei actually breaks this mold fairly well.
STORY 7/10
The story takes a bit to start up, but it actually becomes really enjoyable not too far into it. For an anime that's focused around a high-school girl's desire to have sex, it's somewhat tame for the genre, mind you some fan-service is still thrown in. Instead it explores youth, relationships, and emotions. As the story progresses, it gets all the better as characters develop and new twists happen.
ART 6/10
The art is nothing too spectacular. Then
...
again, it isn't bad either. It's suiting and quirky.
SOUND 5/10
One thing to note is that the sound was rather 'eh' in B Gata H Kei. The opening and closing numbers are both long and drab, the voice acting is generally good, but occasionally questionable. Other sound effects and music tracks are often repeated.
CHARACTER 7/10
B Gata H Kei does a really good job with the characters in it. The main characters actually are dynamic and show progression, unlike most animes of its genre. In it we watch Yamada, the main female protagnist, develop as she begins to learn more about 'love' after her pursuits to have sex. We watch the main antagonist (who to prevent spoilers, won't be given away) bring her own downfall. Overall, for its genre, it really accells here.
ENJOYMENT 7/10
While I'm not a normal viewer of the genre, B Gata H Kei stands out and proves itself to be a rather solid anime. With only 12 episodes, it's an easy and quick watch that all turns out fairly enjoyable. It's not something that I'd want to watch again, or something I'd talk about often, but definitley something that I enjoyed watching.
OVERALL 7/10
SIDE NOTES (SPOILER WARNINGS):
There is one thing in this that caught my attention and I'm sure it has caused quite a controversy in it as it really sits in a 'gray' area. The characters' ages are around 15-17. As expected in an ecchi-based anime, especially one that's about a girl trying to lose her virginity, there is a lot of nudity-scenes, and while there is some fanservice, a lot of it is plot-oriented and usually censored and often humorized.
That being said, it was really strange towards the end that they showed Yamada's breasts uncensored. While the anime implies time has past and they may be older, she is still underaged, and even in an anime about teenagers and pressure on teenagers with relationships and virginity, it still bothers me to some extent to see uncensored and underaged in the anime.
