Frieren is a story of an immortal elf who takes a path to learn about mortality. Her mere ten-year adventure (like a trip to the grocery or something) kickstarted many changes in her thinking and she needs to take her time (like a short nap in the garden) to digest and understand them.
For the most part, Frieren is a good coming-of-age and slice-of-life story, with battle sequences happening occasionally, but they don't control the general atmosphere. The direction is perfect. It's very cosy. It covers a very abstract story of an immortal trying to understand mortals (so relatable!). The author has plenty of good ideas
...
for what that immortal person would feel and think. It feels like Frieren actually has MANY years of experience and maturity. All she's missing is what the story is about.
The author created a unique fantasy world and the animation team did their very best to bring it to life. Each story and character feels very fleshed out and the pacing is just enough to digest everything that is happening. And, ironically, it never gets too slow. The major moments often keep me speechless, not only storytelling-wise but animation-wise too. There's huge effort put into this story from various angles.
