It is obvious, the mangaka of sousou no frieren learned a lot from the mistakes made in the similar series and only used the good parts of them. I didn't see any crucial mistakes. Instead, it blends the human relationships and fantasy greatly. There are many things to learn from frieren about how we should spend our time with the people we like.
Compared to other recent series, sousou no frieren is wonderful. However, it is not the best anime of the all-time as rated in myanimelist.

I think Nanatsu no Maken ga Shihai suru has everything that a magic school anime needs. Interesting characters, mysterious world, duel scenes... Most characters are unique in their personalities and abilities, developing relationships with each other. We can say the character development is dynamic. All characters are grey, there is no such thing as a villain or ally character.
Every season they publish dozens of magic school animes, everybody likes them excluding me. This time, it's the opposite. I can't guarantee whether you'll like Nanatsu no Maken or not, but I'm pretty sure that it's better than most magic school animes. If you like others, ...

Two parts of the first season were not that well, but just to watch this season, I would recommend people to somehow endure.
Maybe the best part of the series, human relations. It is always dynamic, sometimes unexpected and interesting, but especially this season, you can literally watch the way characters' relations whole day. I personally prefer this kind of aspects of series rather than cutting monsters into slices while jumping on a desert. In 1080p video settings, cities look amazing and majestic. I agree, renting a girl friend seems not quite convenient concept, but I think the characters and events are entertaining. Maybe that because I like these kind of relationship stories.
Main character is really annoying, but while I was watching, I never tought like I have never seen this kind of guy. Side characters are maybe one of the best aspects of the story.
