It was an ambitious concept of multiple ending, but felt average to me. I have seen both movies, this being the second.
It technically is the sadder ending, but it ain't that type of ending that will make you shed tears.
The story for both movies differ in terms of love interest and which parent MC choose to stay with after they get divorced.
Story -
MC stays with Father, a research scientist, falls in love with the daughter of his father's colleague (step-mom). Due to a stupid misunderstanding and tragic accident, the girl dies and MC is determined to find a solution to revive her.
...
This movie is more technical in explaining the theories of dimension travel as majority of it takes place inside the research institute in contrast to the other movie that shows his outside life.
Voice Acting -
Horrendous. MC is the most tone dead emotionless character i have ever seen in all anime. The other characters' performance aren't any better either, but damn MC voice acting really kills the mood since you will hear him the most. When MC gets angry at his parents for not being more angry towards him for causing the girl's accident, it really resonated with me. Because i could say the same for MC's subpar voice acting THROUGHOUT the movie.
Animation
Does not fee like a movie level budget, rather ordinary. Not to say that its bad, given the standard of the movie, breathtaking animation really is not needed at all.
Is it necessary to watch the second movie
Honestly no. Both movies at the end will give you a short summary of what goes on in the other universe for context. Of course, the other movie will go into way more detail on the perspective of the other side.
Conclusion
Overall, it is an average forgettable movie. I looked forward to this movie and i was left underwhelmed.
The other movie is better

It was an ambitious concept of multiple ending, but felt average to me. I have seen both movies, this being the first.
I wouldn't consider this a "Happy ever after" ending, but it is technically a more positive ending.
The story for both movies differ in terms of love interest and which parent MC choose to stay with after they get divorced.
Story -
MC stays with mother, a normal citizen. MC goes to public school, falls in love with a smart girl. They played with the idea that both the guy and girl has actually switched places with their other selves multiple times in the movie,
...
but both don't realize. It had a good start, playing with the idea of "What if" and choices. Makes the viewer actually think about how different life be if they made different choices, maybe they be happier, maybe they be together with a girl instead of strangers if they just dared to start that conversation.
Voice Acting -
Horrendous. It be mean to say the movie is boring at times, but the actors surely are. MC is the most tone dead emotionless character i have ever seen in all anime. The other characters' performance aren't any better either, but damn MC voice acting really kills the mood since you will hear him the most. The voice acting is absolutely flat, no range of emotions. Its hard to feel happy or sad when your voice actors can't even portray that emotion.
I consider this the better of the two movies.

"Monster" is a good anime, but my opinion is that it is way overrated.
Story
Premise is good, a very chilling intro. Tenma has to face the consequences of his decision in saving the child who becomes a sociopath serial murderer in the future and decides to right his wrong by killing the "monster" he birthed. After being framed for murder, Tenma sets out to gather evidence to prove his innocence and to kill Johan to prevent further tragedies.
Does this anime require 74 episodes, DEFINITELY NOT. There are fillers in these 74 episodes, to the argument of some that they add depth to the MC, but
...
nothing to the plot really. Over the course of the show, MC had so many opportunities to kill Johan, but because of "PLOT", Johan somehow escapes or Tenma just pussy out. But the general plot of the show is great, really shows how cold and calculating Johan is, his overarching plan to commit mass murder. How MC and gang piece together evidence to uncover Johan past and investigate.
Character
Tenma - He was a great MC at the start, he had commitment, he had drive, he had the determination to end the monster he created. He felt wronged, he wanted revenge but he also wanted justice and felt the responsibility to take matters into his own hands. But he fell through at the end, regressing back to another typical "I believe he can be saved" MC. Tenma has no follow-through, he consistently fails to do what he sets out in the first place. Even if the person is a villain, he keeps letting his Doctor side take over. Over the course of these 74 episodes, the viewer will constantly be tortured with the predicament of "You are a doctor, you save lives, not take them".
Johan - The monster himself is the best character in the show, incredibly charismatic. At first, the show implied that maybe he is just a troubled mental patient that needed help, but glad they went with the "No, This guy is really just a villain from birth". The way Johan carries himself, talks and manipulate is top-notch.
Anna - The sister of Johan. What a burden she is, she is the second reason this show dragged so long, first being MC with his constant hesitation to pull the trigger. Girl is the manifestation of Trauma. Her memories contain the truth and past of Johan. But everytime she recalls something, it just results in her screaming or passing out. There is character growth on her part in becoming more mature and hardened towards the end. But in the end, just like Tenma, she cant bear to kill her own brother.
SHOUTOUT to Grimmer - Man was a side character in this show. However everyone who watched finish this anime can agree he deserved to be the MC more than Tenma.
Conclusion
If you are patient, give it a watch. It is an engaging story, but it is not for everyone. After the halfway mark, you will feel the show is dragging out more than it has to. It has a great climax of mass murder in the final episodes, but you have to go through a lot of frustration as the viewer to reach that far. After watching this anime, i honestly recommend to rather just watch a compilation of "All Johan Moments". Johan is what made this anime famous, the rest of the characters are either forgettable or testing your patience.
