I started Tokyo Ghoul because I was very intrigued with the concept. A human teen becomes a ghoul, thanks to a botched organ transplant, and can only feed on human flesh, or starve.
Huh, interesting.
The early volumes had me enthralled, learning how the protagonist would learn to live with this ailment, and even embrace it, was fascinating. His evolution in perspective on ghouls, and society was exceedingly entertaining.
I loved how creepy it could be, and the way the art style made you empathize with the characters.
However, right around the midway point, the story begins to bog down in long fight scenes, that

frequently barely moved the plot forward. This didn't start as an adventure/action series, but by the end of this manga, 80% of the time is spent in pretty standard anime fights.
Perhaps most frustratingly, the series doesn't really "end" but rather concludes the first arc, and then begins, sort of, in Tokyo Ghoul Re. This was frustrating and felt disingenuous as I wasn't planning to sign on for a long series, but rather thought its end, was well an end.
Not a bad series, but one that seems to lose sight of what makes it unique halfway through.
