Soul Eater got a spinoff in the form of a cute girl anime. Hellz yeah! The only thing this show suffers from is that it hit the wrong audience: being a spinoff from a classic shonen anime, it stands to reason that the majority of people to see this show would be fans of the original Soul Eater. But the thing is, fans of shonen action anime are NOT this show's intended audience. (see what I did there?)
Though set in the Soul Eater verse, this show dials back a lot of the silliness that made the original so endearing; none of Black Star's signature
...
cockiness, or naked catgirl witches, and only a couple little moments of Death the Kid obsessing over symmetry. This show also redid the designs of the EAT class characters we all know and love e.g. Soul looks less "bad-boy" and more "grim edgelord" if that makes sense, and Maka looks at least 5 years younger than she does in the main series, even though this is supposed to be only one year ago. Furthermore, Soul Eater NOT doesn't leave Death City to go on wacky adventures chasing bad guys or listening to Excalibur wax poetic about his past.
Instead, we get a laid-back slice-of-life anime with cute girls just being supportive and wholesome to each other as they navigate life in Death City. And I can appreciate that for what it is, though I am not surprised that a lot of Soul Eater fans aren't able to. The main payoff of this show is that it has many moments that evoke a warm and fuzzy "aww that's so cute!" sort of sensation, like any time Anya goes tsundere, or every interaction between Jacqueline and Kim. You really need to be into experiencing that warm and fuzzy feeling to enjoy Soul Eater NOT! But for those who can answer the call to moe, this is a very rewarding experience.
