I started watching anime on Toonami with DBZ and soon moved on to other shows. I only found out that what I was watching was called anime in high school; before then they were just cartoons like any other.
I'm still confused as to why something like Shin-chan is considered anime and Avatar: the Last Airbender isn't :(
I like my anime on the extremes. I can just as easily go for something slow and dark and brooding as I can something fast and crazy and fun. I don't like formulaic anime, so most harems get a 5 or 6 rating from me. Some shows start out good (Bleach) but end up with a low rating because they begin to get repetitive after a while.
I watch subs mostly because I think the actors are better and the show feels closer to the original creator's intentions. There is also an element of attraction in hearing a foreign language as well, so I'll still lean towards subs despite how good some of the English voice actors are now.
