I watched this movie because I appreciate anime that convey harsh and difficult realities in life. Colorful is a movie that is a masterpiece in some aspects but mediocre in others.
Unlike other movies, I found most enjoyable aspect revolves around the story and the themes that are conveyed. The art and sound both seem reasonable but are lacking in comparison and could provide better support to the emotions this movie tries to convey.
Story: 10
Realistic and has a lot of depth. Imagine yourself entering the body of a young teenager who recently attempted suicide. You are discovering and wondering why he tried to suicide and

relate with the problems he faced. Add to that the profound meanings hidden throughout the movie which you discover at the end and say "whoa". That's the movie story-line in a nutshell.
Art: 5
The art is reasonably good considering that the movie aired 9 years ago. Considering today's standards it is mediocre but did not really add to or take away from my experience.
Sound: 5
Mediocre. The music fails to really support emotions that the story conveys. Although it wasn't bad, I am extremely disappointed because I feel like it could've really brought everybody to tears if done properly.
Character: 10
Colorful gives the impression that everybody is "clean" but spares no effort in revealing the "ugly" in many characters over time. The movie is realistic and full of people you would hate. People who are hateful, jealous, bullies, inconsiderate, ignorant and every other characteristic you could possibly despise. We are limited to the viewpoint of the protagonist, so he becomes the focal-point for character development while we lack some understanding about other characters.
Enjoyment/Overall: 8
I personally enjoyed this movie a little extra because I could relate with the struggles of the protagonist. People have to deal with hate because of family abuse, being cheated on and generally being victimized. Colorful conveys a valuable lesson about this issue.
