Short review for a short waste of time.

I was not a fan of Gargantia the series, so I thought about checking out the specials which are usually cute/funny enough to forgive their parent. WRONG! DEAD WRONG!

These VERY short omakes are a complete waste of time. They do absolutely nothing. There is no plot. The dialogue sounds like they just told the VAs to improvise. The art/animation is comparable (if not worse) to amateur Flash movies you see on the net. There is just no effort put into these bonus minis.

I wonder how the VA's felt as they were doing these. I actually liked KnK's omakes ... better, and I rated those a 5/10.

Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! does not have a great story nor does it bring any new concepts to light. What it DOES accomplish is to entertain you with silly cliches and recycled, but effective, material... And it does so better than most anime I've watched lately.

Story 8/10
This is the weakest point of the anime. It starts simple enough as a light comedy and satire. In the last four episodes it attempts to tag along a deeper story, which not only seems out of mood but is also handled haphazardly. It does however stir some nostalgia as other reviewers have mentioned. I myself grew ... out of my childhood fantasies at a very young age, and regret it. This story made me laugh at those silly yet happy memories.

Art 8/10
There is nothing really to admire or detest, seems typical Kyoani. Some deformity and scaling issues here and there but overall it is very good. Nice eye artwork on some scenes.

Sound 9/10
The one song with the guitar intro that plays throughout the series is VERY catchy and I found myself picking up my guitar and playing it a couple of times. The rest is typical but well done. No complaints at all.

Character 10/10
There is nothing new or improved with the character archetypes. The exception is that the characters are playing with the notions and illusions (or delusions) of childhood fantasies, while attempting to grow out of them. The main leads are not fully developed or explained but remain enjoyable. The side characters are token-ish and poorly developed. BUT... They are funny, entertaining and just WORK with their surroundings and the story.

Enjoyment 11/10
Yes I realize there is no 11. But, frankly, while the story and characters left much to be desired the overall enjoyment surprised me. I've watched the first eight episodes at least three times each. That is how much I enjoyed this anime. Some people gave this anime a low score, and I understand why. However, don't let those low scores fool you. The anime works. It's silly and reckless fun, don't expect anything more and you will enjoy it for what it is.

Chuunibyou could have easily played off as a typical mindless-moe, semi ecchi anime, but it didn't. No, it is not perfect, the anime has flaws. No, it doesn't bring anything new to the table. BUT, YES... It is entertaining. YES, it is funny. And yes... you will like it if you want to laugh at silly antics and the nostalgia associated with growing out of child-fantasy-filled mind.
