Mixed Feelings
A continuation of a series of reviews on hentai, which for those unversed in anime speech is erotic anime.

Perhaps a bit more tame of a hentai anime compared with its typically grotesquely carnal counterparts, the story follows Kouki Hidaka's relationships with the four sisters that comprise his neighbors and the carnal relationships he enters with them. What is interesting is the level of trust he establishes with each and every one of them, and the level of trust each neighbor has with him as they enter their polyamorous relationship. The characterizations of the eldest daughter, Yurina Hanabishi and the third daughter, Saori Hanabishi are the ...

Cleave off the ecchi aspects of this anime, and Arifureta Shokugyou de Sekai Saikyou proves to be a refreshing take on the isekai genre. Our protagonist Hajime Nagumo was reincarnated to this new world with his entire class, as well as their teacher, the ever kind but somewhat stupid Aiko Hatayama. He's set up by one of his fellow classmates, literally sent down in the void to die alongside savage beasts. Don't despair, however, for our hateful protagonist comes back with a vengeance, and a lover no less (although having a prepubescent-appearing, thousands of year old vampire? Not sure if that's the best choice for ...

Our second season of Ansatsu Kyoushitsu has become much darker to really drive home the ideas of hope to cement character development, but does so by sacrificing the story in an ending and flashback sequence that may touch the heart, but is disappointing cerebrally. The character with the greatest amount of change, thankfully, is our protagonist Nagisa Shiota, as he must finally come to terms that as he and his fellow students are growing up, they must embrace but ultimately move on from their pasts, done so by literally having to kill their teacher. The origins of Koro-sensei are revealed, with a surprising character being ...

Ansatsu Kyoushitsu took the world by storm, and it's not hard to see the reason. The sheer ridiculous nature of a tentacled, smiley faced octopus creature being a teacher of delinquent students who are paid by the government to kill him is just next to Danganronpa-levels of violence and humor, if not balanced by the actual positive impact our Koro-sensei is making on the students' lives. It's a great comedy with great art with a fantastic cast of funny students (led by the seemingly apathetic but kind Nagisa Shiota and the violent Karma Akabane). Notable standouts include students Tomohito Sugino and A.I. Ritsu, as well ...

Another (Anime) add
Mixed Feelings
Let's just get this out of the way: Another is dark. It's a horror anime that has its characters devolve into insanity somewhat reminscent of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, except the perverseness of the horror of the latter anime works brilliantly with its innocent nature. This one, not so much. Kōichi Sakakibara seems to have a good head but doesn't use it, and his "friend" (and secondary protagonist) Mei Misaki can easily be mistaken for the delusional protagonist from Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! (without any of the redeeming comedic qualities). They are hunting for a "extra person", a character who was supposed to ...

Now this anime is a real oddity, and a real gem at that. The concept is unique: a former child star is hired by a royal guard from another world to act as the manager for a failing theme park desparately in need of improvement, lest the fantastical inhabitants of the park be doomed to starvation once the park closes. The choice of characters in this anime is amazing, and the naming inspirations are brilliant. With our protagonists Seiya Kanie (a clear nod to Kanye West) and royal guard Isuzu Sento (50 Cent), the comedy is brilliant of the hapless, bored and clearly apathetic Seiya ...

Amagami SS returns once again for a second season, this time making my complaint about the shortness of each character's arc even worse by having only 2 episodes devoted to each love interest. And these arcs pick up after the first season, meaning if you want to pick up one after the other, it'll make for a very kaleidoscopic viewing order. For fans of VN novels, I suspect this anime will be perfect viewing material. I, however, found this style frustrating and conflicting to the emotional core that should've been the point of the story. At this point I can't empathize with our protagonist Junichi ...

Amagami SS (Anime) add
Mixed Feelings
It is difficult to review and appreciate Amagami SS due to the visual novel-esque design of the episodes. Every four episodes revolves around a different girl, with the tying narrative being where our protagonist Junichi Tachibana started: dumped on Christmas Eve in front of the snow. Of the love interests, I must say that I enjoyed Haruka Morishima (whose arc covers episodes 1-4) the most, but that is perhaps due to personal tastes, or because it was the first arc. It became increasingly difficult to see the deviations of the relationships afterwards due to the characters' natures changing (perhaps what makes VN games so appealing ...

Allison to Lillia is long. Truthfully, it should have been written as two separate animes with only the mild familial connection that connects the two arcs. The first arc features tomboy Allison Whittington and her involvement in the military affairs of this fictional WWI-eque background, and of her relationship with scholar Wil Schultz, which (predictably) ends in a child, the eponymous Lillia, the focus of the second arc and her reaction to the legacy of her parents. The use of Wil in both arcs (I won't spoil what happens to bridge him into the second arc) is both lazy and unfortunate in its usage of ...

It's rare that a standard anime can bring me to tears (hence its higher rating than my usual), but it is that good. The general concept of the anime, in which twelve female assassins are hired to an academy to pretend to be students while attempting to kill their thirteenth class member, Haru Ichinose, is refreshing, but the concept of the Queen Bee is confusing and ultimately irrelevant. Where this anime shines is in the romance that develops between Haru and one of the assassins, Tokaku Azuma. It's highly rewarding to see the character development Tokaku undergoes when compared to the other assassins, and how ...
