Casshern Sins is a very unique and impressive anime. However, it's not for everyone. It's slow paced and it tends to drag throughout some of the episodes, the storyline is slightly confusing, and at times it doesn't make sense. But it deals with philosophical subjects and the episodes are very thought-provoking.
Storyline: 8
Like I said before, Casshern Sins is slow paced and it tends to drag throughout some of the episodes. The story itself is very good, and even at the end of the series you are left with several questions. Are Luna and Casshern truly immortal? What exactly are Dio, Leda, Luna, and Casshern
...
(are they robots, humans, or something else entirely)? How did Luna cause the Ruin?
It definitely leaves you thinking.
I loved the way they incorporated philosophical themes within the episodes. It dealed with the subject of Life and Death in an interesting way, and it really helped to impact the mood.
One thing that started to get annoying after a while was the number of times they kept saying "Casshern". The dialogue itself was very simple and easy to follow, and the way they talked about the Life and Death themes was emotional and impacting.
It did have its fair share of plot holes, and even some of them weren't solved at the end. Where did the colored stone fit into all of this? Why does Friender seem immune to the Ruin? These are just some of the many unanswered questions viewers were left with at the end of Casshern Sins.
If there would have been a few more episodes, perhaps the plot holes could have been fixed and the questions could have been answered. And maybe the ending would have ended better.
Art: 10
I must say, the art style for Casshern Sins is absolutely astounding! Each character is designed in his/her own unique way. Despite the fact that it's set in a ruined, dying world, the background is beautiful. There are a lot of bold lines in the art style and the graphics are AMAZING! They put a lot of emphasis on Dio, Leda, and Casshern's beauty. Madhouse did an excellent job with designing everything, they definitely made the art unforgettable.
Sound: 10
The sound for Casshern Sins was perfect! The music they used with the episodes fit extremely well and it helped a lot with the emotional scenes. I actually found myself downloading the music they used for the episodes and the ending themes. They were also
careful not to overdo the sound effects, they kept it simple and real. The voice actors did an amazing job with the English dub, (though I did find Ringo's voice annoying at times). You could feel the emotion in their voices, which is something that not all English dubs have.
Characters: 9
I found myself falling in love with all of the characters; whether they were the protagonists, antagonists, or the one-shot characters. They were very well thought out and each and every one of their appearences had an impact on the storyline. Even the characters that started out as dull and boring, soon become well fleshed out as the storyline progressed. Each individual character had their own natural flaws which made them differ from one another. However, I really think they could have done a bit more with Ringo's development. She is portrayed as a cheerful, innocent little girl in the midst of the Ruin. But it seemed that they kept emphasising her innocence a bit TOO much. They could have also done a bit more work with Casshern as well.
Luna's change in personality is surprising. At first, she is presented as a saviour; the answer to everything. Though it didn't show much about her past, it seemed as if she was a quiet, kind person. When she came back, however, she was completely different. She was disgusted with the idea of death (even though she originally gave it), and she became a selfish, uncaring person. But it seems reasonably, she did die after all.
Leda seemed dull and boring at the beggining of the series, and she didn't have much development. She just seemed like a selfish, vain woman with a lust for eternal life. But as the story progressed, her character became better developed. It turns out she wasn't always like that, she was actually a kind, gentle person. But the loss of her child changed who she was. In the end, all she really wanted was another chance at life, another chance at being a mother again. She was one of the characters that I truly fell in love with, and she was also one of the few that left a huge impact on me at the end of the series.
Overall: 9
I truly enjoyed this anime, and through its ups and downs, it never ceased to amaze me. The characters each left an impact on me, and even though the storyline wasn't the best, it was still pretty Damn good. If you ever get a chance to watch this anime, let me just say that you wouldn't regret it.
